A Lefty Caywood / Roby Northwest Gun

Play with loads before you do anything else. If you don’t compete, then I highly recommend a rear sight. It’s night and day difference in terms of accuracy. I have a Caywood Chiefs gun with a 26” barrel with a rear sight. 3” groups at 50 are easy. Added one to my Bess Carbine. Same thing. I...

    Rifleman's knife

It’s a hunting sword. Took him 9 months to make it…and he swears he will never make another!

    Rifleman's knife

His steel and his leatherwork are equally as exceptional. At some point I owe Tallpine a post about this completely handmade item. Steel, leather, everything…the only thing God made was the deer that made the antler and the cow that made the leather.

    36 caliber deer hunting

The .36 killed A LOT of men. It was considered very capable in that role. The .44 was designed to kill Horses. I don’t understand all the hand wringing about using a .36 launched from a rifle to kill deer at reasonable ranges. Muzzleloaders don’t kill with “energy”, they kill by punching holes...

WANTED Ft Meigs axe…anyone have one to spare?

Got the October Country. The handle had a really nasty shellack sort of finish…stripped it with oven cleaner and gave it a couple coats of oil. Looks great. Handles great, even holds a good edge. Have already disassembled a couple of deer with it Still looking for another for my son if...

WITHDRAWN Rear sight for Zoli 1841 "Mississippi" rifle

Cool. Just giving you an option you may not be aware of. If HC is your goal it will be a long journey with a Zoli.

WITHDRAWN Rear sight for Zoli 1841 "Mississippi" rifle

You might consider a Benton rear sight. I built a custom 1841 just to mount under a Benton sight. Really enjoyed it. https://www.ssfirearms.com/proddetail.asp?prod=41S134

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

Rich, Do you have any pics of a modern iron barrel in final finished form? Curious what level of polish it would have and how it would “grey” with use and reasonable care.. compared to the modern steel that we all have experience with now.

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

Do you read anything posted here? Or just randomly post inane thoughts? He used his wife and her leggings as an example.

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

Rchas is pointing to this scholarly publication as a reference for when the technology was available and in use. Not making assertions that it was in use in the colonies or on the guns in question. If you are not able to contribute in this thread in a way other than to try to impress everyone...

HC barrel finish for a 1770s...

Individual examples can always be found… that doesn’t disprove the idea. The army’s aversion to the Henry rifle is an easy example. And the insistence on infantry fighting in ranks in the face of those cannons is another. There are a lot of straw dogs in your post. Your wife’s leggings make my...
