What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Made the decision that I need to do some serious downsizing and simplifying. Only gonna keep guns that I shoot, books that I need, etc. For example, do I REALLY need 6 Lyman 55s?

    WANTED RB mold wanted

I have this 1850's target rifle I'm trying to get back into shooting condition. The bore is larger than .375 but smaller than .380. I could shoot .375 balls with a super thin patch if I hammer it down the barrel. I have a .360 mold but that is real sloppy fit even with a thick pillow ticking...

Green River Forge NW trade gun

I set a flint bevel down about 1/8" from the frizzen @ half cock. When it's lowered all the way the edge of the flint points right at the frizzen screw and is nearly 3/8" above the pan. Polished out the frizzen as best as I could (there's some serious gouges in it) and still no spark at all...

Green River Forge NW trade gun

Yeah miss-typed my email address and it created a whole new identity. Gotta fix that ... Anyways here are pictures of lock. The other thing I noticed is that the cock doesn't point to the flash hole like a lot of other guns do - my friend's Pedersoli has the edge of the flint pointing directly...

Green River Forge NW trade gun

(apologies if this is a double post- computer puked halfway through sending so . . .) I have shot percussion guns all my life but am an absolute noob when it comes to flintlocks. I have a GRF trade RIFLE that will not spark. At all. The lock is marked "made in Italy" inside. It's pretty (if...

Green River Forge NW trade gun

I have a new-to-me GRF 50 cal trade rifle. It won't spark. At all. The frizzen looks blackened; I am assuming that someone tried to case harden the frizzen and managed to anneal it or something. Anyone know whether replacement frizzens are available? Mine sez "made in italy" on the...

New Toy - any info appreciated

Just acquired a Green River Forge trade gun. 36 inch 50 cal. barrel and a twist that looks to be somewhere between 1:60 and 1:72. Really pretty rifle; nice wood, nice bronzy browning, oct-to-round barrel. Looks unfired. Got a really good deal because the dealer thought it was a Dixie import...

WANTED Looking for a short barreled flintlock

I am in the market for a for a short barreled (30 -34"), largish caliber (54 - 62) flintlock but something a little more traditional than a Lyman or TC. Something along the lines of: 1803 Harper's Ferry English Sporting rifle Jager My budget is only $1450 or so

    Stuck ball in Hawkin Rifle

If the barrel has a breech plug, you can always remove it and drive the ball out with a dowel or rod

Need help identifying old civil war musket

Barrel appears to be from an 1842 Austrian. Lockplate also looks austrian, but much earlier. CSA bought a lot of 70 cal Austrian SB flintlocks that had been converted to percussion

Percussion caps and other supplies during the last shortage?

I started shooting in the NSSA in 1967. Took a multi decade hiatus and resumed in 2005. The first season I was back, I shot leftover powder and caps from the early 80's. worked just fine. One tin of caps had been opened and the foam pad on top had deteriorated into some sort of sticky goo...

Anyone Know Who Made This 1860?

    Cleaning mix?

One of my shooting buddies uses a novel approach - Lysol disinfectant wipes. Theyre mostly water soap, and isopropyl alcohol. cut squares, swab, repeat. I think he's even tried it as RB patches. YMMV

    Lubing chewed balls

In the N-SSA we are required to shoot smoothbore without patch or wad. Many of the shooters fuzz up the balls by rolling between farriers rasp. Almost everyone uses some sort of lube. The current trick seems to be dipping them in liquid Alox. Actually makes cleanup harder IMHO. I dip the...

Trying to figure out what the original sights were

There was an Ashmore family of gunsmiths in England but IFAIK they were pre-percussion era. Was there an American Ashmore lock builder?

    Pistol ID Help Needed

The hammer looks Austrian - Lorenz?. Austrians frequently did not have ramrod channels - rods were carried in the belt or backpack. I've seen that flower symbol before. Lot of people mistake it for Japanese Chrysanthemum. If I can find my notes maybe I can help with the symbols

Preventing wood erosion & scorching behind military rifle/musket nipple?

One of my old team mates had a simple solution - he put a dollup of grease ( don't know what kind - nothing flammable) on the wood before a match, wiped it off after the end of the day. I tried it, but couldn't manage to not smear it off in short order!
