Carolina Gun on its way to Wyoming

    Another beauty.

    Shooting Rest?

For me, it depends on what I am doing. I like the first rest for load development. thats just to take a little of me out of the equation finding the tightest groups. Once I know which load works best, I like to shoot standing freehand so that is how I will sight in. I don't like to sight in...

    San Antonio Area

Where does the White Smoke Brigade shoot? I am in far north Austin but don’t mind a little drive.

Duelist1954 Lecture on 18th Century Smoothbore Shooting

Maybe its just me, but I always thought he would be a fun guy to hang around a campfire with and hear him talk about all this. I actually didn't watch this video, I just listened to it while doing to my job. Found it very entertaining.

    Building a Carolina Gun/ Type G

Watching the process is great. I can't wait to get a trade gun.

    1849 As A First "Colt"?

I have had a 49 pocket and Wells Fargo, 51, 61, and 62 police. My favorite for fun and ease of shooting is the 61 navy. The 49 was fun, but as others have said I spent lots of time with cap jams.

If it says rifle it should have rifling unless it says smooth rifle. Muskets get a little more tricky. Some places will say rifled musket and some just say musket. You really want to read the specifications and see what they say about the twist rate on those. All brown Bess and trade muskets...

    Beginner

I just got a brown bess carbine. Took it out and it was reliable and a lot of fun. Haven't tried the Pedersoli Trade gun. I am holding out for a custom trade gun. The brown bess was just because I have no patients and really wanted a smoothbore. I am sure someone can give you a more long term...

    New to black powder shooting

Howdy. I actually shoot about 45 minutes outside College Station. If you want to try a few different guns out just to get a feel for them you are welcome to join when I am out there. That is, as long as you don't mind the Burnt Orange I would have on.

Info needed for my Remington New Model Army Revolver

Looks like one of the guns the referred to as an Avenging Angel. They were cut off and loading levers removed to make them lighter and easier to hide. Here is one that sold on Morphy Auctions a few years ago.

    Patch lube, spit or lube?

I imagine a lot has to do with what you are able to expect out of your muzzleloader. I know when I shoot precision rifles I care about everything being consistent and putting shots in the same hole. When I am shooting the flintlocks I will never get the same accuracy. Mostly because I am...

Got lucky, I think, with a 1851 navy arms 36

I had the Uberti 1849 and now have an Uberti 1862 Pocket Police. Both had the same issue and just polishing the hammer face and nipple changes didn't fix it. I ended up having to install a second main spring and that fixed the issue. There is a video on youtube a guy had up that showed in slow...

    Cleaning

I actually enjoy cleaning in the field. I shoot on my own land so I don't have to worry about other people being around and it has just become part of the experience for me. I don't think it would be as much fun doing that at a shooting range.

    Patch lube, spit or lube?

For me it depends on the gun and the day. Thats one of the things I love about the muzzleloaders, never get bored trying something a little different. I have to admit. I can only use spit for so many shots, and then I get dry mouth. For prelubed patches I like mink oil or lamps tallow. Don't...

    Cleaning

I just use some moose milk in a spray bottle for the occasional patch during shooting and for actual cleaning. I tried the medical alcohol swabs for the between shots, but found they just pushed the fouling down and blocked my flash hole. As long as I don't make the patch to wet, just moist, the...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess Carbine

Itching for a nice trade gun but still a good ways off on the waiting list. I decided to scratch that itch with a Pedersoli Brown Bess carbine. I have never been very good practicing patience. Got out and shot it yesterday. It is so much fun. I fired about forty shots. Didn’t have any misfire...

My Modified Build of a Traditions Kentucky Rifle kit

I know I am reviving an old thread, but I love how you did this rifle. Really inspired me on my current project customizing a Traditions Kentucky Flintlock I have. If it comes out half as nice as yours, I will consider it a success.

Pistol to go with a rifle

I wouldn’t mind a Crockett pistol, but since they don’t make them anymore, I haven’t been able to find one.
