Just when you think you've seen it all

This one's a heart breaker. You mentioned Hacker Martin and I passed up a chance to buy his last unfinished rifle at Dixie Gun Works in 87 or so. I asked Turner ( who had bought a couple of my Tn Mountain rifles) if he thought I had the skill to finish it, he was enthusiastic and said yes. Well...

Just when you think you've seen it all

I haven't read every reply but plenty enough to see this is a very diverse group, a lot of TC and CVS shooters and a few with CLA membership. A fact or two for the ones that are new or just not interested in originals or hand made, hand carved custom guns. Go to the Annual CLA show in Lexington...

Wanting to get a smoothbore flintlock

The Log Cabin shop has a .58 cal/24 ga smooth bore that is hand carved nicely made by me (30 years experience). It is PA painted gun in a rust red/brown with contrasting green and yellow designs. It has a Chambers rd faced lock and Ed Ryle 42" Oct bbl. It has hand made sights and shoots rd balls...

Question on issues with breech plug fitting

Dave has it right, many if the original threads weren't more than .400 long and unbelievable poor quality threads, museum of Appalachia near Knoxville has many on display. Also look at good pictures of golden age guns and the lock fence will be at the end off the breech and vent hardly 7/16"...

    Colonial rifle build for authenticity

Keep in mind that the barrels of that day were iron and it is documented that it aged much differt than modern steel which rusts quickly.

    Beware of that old muzzleloader

I received my grandfather's .31 cal 1830's pepperbox as my Christmas present, I was 14 and had handled it every time we made the 200 mile trip to Southern Wisconsin. After getting it in my possession I wanted to hear caps going off, thought that would be cool. I knew about percussion caps but...

    Barrel rebore service

Ed Rayl is best contacted with an early morning call, before he starts up machines. I also send notes and requests via postal service, he's very good with answers, just very busy making and re-boring barrels.

Set Triggers on Dixie Mountain Rifle

Appreciate your comments but I might have made a mistake about the early Dixie TN mountain rifles, my bad. After much thought I remember that only the .32’s were made in Belguim, probably no 50’s, wish I knew for sure. I had a one on one connection with Hunter and talked to Turner quite a bit...

    vent hole diameter

I've lost touch with what the bevel brothers are up to. Their information was very well considered and spot on. One thing I know is that small vent hole is best for optimal accuracy (probably why Jim Chambers does want his whitelightning drilled out larger. I believe the 1/16" is a very good...

Set Triggers on Dixie Mountain Rifle

You've got a good rifle there, I had a Japanese built in the late 80's and passed it down to my step son as he killed his 1st deer with it. I build double set triggers for my Mountain guns so have studied them quite a bit. Your picture shows very little overlap (engagement) with the sears, is...

    vent hole diameter

I drill out to 1/16" but often enlarge to #51 bit which is ..067. I've never asked why but Jim Chambers Whitening liners come smaller than 1/16 and he says to not drill them out. I've drilled them out since he first starting selling them with good results.

CLOSED PA barn gun, 24ga for sale

I made the gun, bore is as new, Ed Ryle bored it out from the new bbl that I let rust ( long story), Miss Theresa painted it after seeing a barn gun at the contemporary show last year she’s tried to get a feel for PA folk art, she is a good artist, however she used more colors and more “stuff”...

CLOSED PA barn gun, 24ga for sale

I have many pic’s and can probably send them to anyone that is interested. I made the gun, been building up hand carved guns for 27 of the 30 years I’ve been building. Had golden age stuff sell on TOTW for $3700 10 years ago, Hunter at Dixie sold a hand made TN to a collector in England, was...

CLOSED PA barn gun, 24ga for sale

.58 cal smooth bore Folkart painted barn gun. New Chambers rd faced lock, 42” Colerain tapered and swamped bbl bored out to .58 by Ed Ryle, (not Colerains fault, new bbl that I let bore get rusty!). Hand carved Early Reading influence, hand made sights, pipes, trigger, hardened and tempered...

    Southern Mountain Rifle caliber?

I used a 42" Getz barreled .40 flintlock for years, 40 grns 3f for squirrel and 70 for deer, Forty is legal in KY and I killed many deer with it, all clean kills, all double lung at less than 50 yards. My friend and I were hunting the late (Dec) season on the primitive hunting area off Cave Run...

    Daniel Boone rifle information

Also have to remember that at least twice he lost his rifle/gun when captured by Indians and he had them replaced. Always wondered if Squire, his gunmaker brother, made any of Danials. A great story is Danial’s escape from Chief Blackfish’s village and how after he gained trust and was allowed to...

Who went to the CLA in Lexington KY?

Went yesterday, been going for 22 years and for the first time they had wide isles and everybody in 1 room. Not sure if it wasn’t as crowded or if the open more open space made it look that way. I’m stocked up on planks and have locks and bbls so only bought a single lever double set from Jim...
