    Flint maintenance

Even when I only got maybe 30 shots out of it tops?

    Flint maintenance

I'm a geology major, so am familiar with conchoidal fracture. Just not sure how to translate it to knapping the flint, it's a whole art in and of itself. So pressure applied to the top removes material from the bottom? I think I get it, it's not so much flaking or grinding away as it is...

    Flint maintenance

Yeah that's nothing like I was doing. Thanks, I'll try that asap and see if it starts sharpening.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

It's fairly close to the top... It probably offset the jag once it was far enough in and prevented it from going any further.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Hold up. Could the problem be from a bent ram rod? No I can't feel any protrusion, but I'm realizing the rod is a tad bent. Could that have made it get stuck?

    Flint maintenance

Oh so maybe I was doing it to hard then. I'll keep it in mind. It's pretty dull so it might take some real working. Thanks!

    Flint maintenance

So I finally got my Bess out for a round of SUCCESSFUL shooting today. No hiccups, nothing went wrong, everything went perfectly. (I know right, what were the chances knowing my luck thusfar ;) ) The only thing I ran into was the flint dulling. Now I know this is bound to happen, and I was...

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

When I look down the bore with a light it's smooth flat and shiny all the way through. They are screwed on however.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Mine's the short land pattern so the sling swivel is further ahead than where it's getting stuck. You're right though, measuring it would probably be helpful. I might look into getting a caliper if I can't figure out any other possibilities

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Yeah there's one of the ram rod lugs right there. Not sure if that would affect it? Yeah there's gotta be something like that, I'll inspect it closely and see if I find anything.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Oiled it right up, slid it down no problem until about 16 inches in where it wont go any further, tried a few times.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Ok this is getting weird. Tried the dowel idea and it slid fairly easily and consistently through the whole barrel, including where the jag got stuck. So the barrel appears to be fairly even all the way through.

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

That's probably a good idea. Are they able to measure far down the bore too? Yeah it's a Loyalist Bess. Perhaps mine may just have a reverse choke? Gets smaller further down? Either way, I think I will just stick to using a worm instead of the jag. That definitely won't get stuck and if it...

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

No, none at all. It's not a tight fit but there's no room to spare really
  15. JohannesKepler

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

A few scratches in it yeah

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Maybe? It looks fine to me though and it's brand new.
  17. JohannesKepler

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Yeah it has to be. Really is strange, the bore must be smaller than stated. Weird cause it looks perfectly fine when I shine a light down there
  18. JohannesKepler

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Sounds like I have other pretty serious problems :/
  19. JohannesKepler

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Like Bob said, the jag is .72. I haven't personally measured the bore, but the manufacturer told me it was .76 cal. So obviously there is something going on. looking down the bore though I see no obstructions, just smooth surface, and I can load a .715 round ball easy. Totally baffled as to what...
