New to forum; New to muzzle loading

Have fun! Now, before you start shooting...buy a ball puller sized to your barrel, and use the "search" function on this forum to learn how to pull a ball. No offence, but it is usually the first problem we ALL run into....

    Best Animal fat for lube?

Rendering does NOT get rid of salt, and trying to filter it out doesnt work. You could certainly use pork fat trimmings off fresh pork roast, etc. (non processed/unseasoned, etc).

    Meat on the table

    Meat! Good eating there!

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Neat idea, but I am pretty sure the economy of scale for development and machining, Kibler needs to anticipate selling thousands, in a sustained market, to be feasible.

    First Time Buyer Advice

I second a good range rod! I prefer a T handle...and make sure you have ...before shooting...a good quality ball puller...one for your caliber. Trust me on this, you will need it, and the T handle will come in handy. No matter how experienced, everyone dry loads sooner or later, and it is far...

    Nov 5 1861 AGTSNY

Absolutely do not try to clean it up any from the condition it is in...Absolutely a bore cleaning, and a careful hoppes and oil cleaning, but do not try to remove the beautiful patina. It would greatly affect its value. In my very unprofessional opinion.

    Successful Stalk

That is one fine deer, and a great looking (and apparently shooting) rifle.

Skill - barrel making - where to learn

I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a rifle /barrel maker, Each time I stop in I am fascinated by his rifling lathes...( I guess you would call them that), which as I recall were formerly Remington machines. I have eight years machining skills...and I have to say his skills were at a whole...

Skill - barrel making - where to learn

Going way back traditional....pick up a copy of Foxfire 5....it is mainly about hunting, blacksmithing and ML rifle making, with some great information about barrel making. Not in depth, but it gives you an idea of how they went about it in way back days.

    Buck vs Doe

Especially with so many hunters "antler centered", the buck harvest is way out of proportion to does. Especially in modern times (I will refer to here in NY) where deer populations in many area are way too high, it is vital for more does to be taken to help control the herd and keep it healthy...

Newbie Looking for Advice on Failed Ignition of Main Charge

Sounds likely grease in the barrel....Any new gun...totally take down and thoroughly clean....But.....keep in mind....it is possible to leave enough oil/whatever, residue in the breech to prevent ignition. Before shooting, thoroughly swab the barrel. Every muzzleloader will dry load...

Best way to unload after an unsuccessful hunt?

Check with your regulations... In NY we can leave it loaded with cap/ pan powder removed. A new dry charge should easily last all season, unless you have been hunting in wet weather. Also....no spit patch or lube that will dry out. For hunting, I prefer a waxier/greasier lube....my preference is...

Best way to blacken a new sight.

I like to fire blue. heat till cherry red with a propane torch and drop into a pan of oil to cool. It will quench to a beautiful dark royal blue which is pretty durable.

    NY ML season

Yep, totally agree. My area is all forestland, mostly pine, poplar,, darn little mast with no crops any where near. Luckily we do get some late season big racks chasing the does we can count on moving through.

When did small caliber rifles become a thing and why?

Not to mention probably every country boy learning early how to make simple traps/dead falls, etc. Even into the thirties, I was told by my grandma of the big kettle of "everlasting stew" that was fed daily by whatever was scrounged up (rural upstate NY)

    Rain down the barrel?

    Toe Plate on your rifle

I am quite sure by the time I have seated the patched ball, it is very well settled.

    NY ML season

That is one nice thing about NY....overall we have a long deer hunting season, depending on how and where you hunt, running from the end of september to new years...I love the late season, but havent been able to take advantage of it.
