Yea, I'm kinda leaning that way as well. So far this year I've gotten new 1851 Navy and Remington 1858, both NIB Pietta for under $300. I'm pleased with both. Buying used is always a gamble.

I thought about parts availability as well. I can get a new Pietta for $300. Such decisions!

That's what I'm thinking as well. I've been on the lookout for an 1860 Army anyway. The same shop had an ORIGINAL 1849 Colt pocket model...for $1800.00. A bit out of my price range, but it was neat to play with.

A LGS has a Western Arms 1860 Army on consignment for $350. It's in pretty decent condition and looks to have been handled more than shot. I assume it's Uberti made? Can you give me any info on it? If I could get it for $300 would that be a decent price?

That looks awful nice! Would you recommend that I take the lock apart and clean it up? what are thr tisks of breaking something that's not easily replaced?

Wow! I had no clue it might have been a conversion. I guess this rifle has been around the block & back to me. I'm gonna take my time and fix it up properly.

I've already gotten my $30 out of it with the tinkering I've done and learning a bit of it's history. I will post pictures when i"m done with it.

I don't think I'll go down the repair it rabbit hole! I do think it's worth more than I paid for it just for the fun of the hunt and for a project to work on. My plan is to strip the varnish off the stock and refinish in an appropriate stain/finish and enjoy it for what it is. A chunk of history...

I don't want to have that much in it. I do agree that once it's back together I need to do something to make it unable to fire. It's unsafe! I'd hate to have it come into someone's posession after I'm gone and they try to fire it.

Appreciate the input. I knew it was old but appreciate the history on it. I think I'll JB Weld the breechplug back in and finish the stock. It'll look nice hanging in my living room! It's a full stock so any modifications to the barrel length would mean stock work as well. I'd love to hear...

I picked up this rifle at a local shop for $30! It had been sanded and varnished to look pretty, probably as a wall hanger. Upon disassemble I discovered it had serious issues. The lock is marked Ashmore and was rusted solid, so I scrubbed as much off as I could and boiled it in distilled water...

I didn't think that would be much information to help. the barrel and lock look old but the stock has been re varnished at some time.

In a local shop I found a rifle with an Ashmore marked lock. It's percussion, full stock, brass patchbox & triggerguard. It has set triggers and the front trigger is straight. The barrel is pinned and browned and appears to be about .36 caliber. I'm unable to upload pictures from my phone and...

On my Invest Arms that rib was aluminum that had been painted when I redid it I used flat black spray paint on it. Turned out ok.
