what size ball to use (exactly)

so I pulled the cylinder and measured the chambers with a digital caliper, the chambers were 0.450" the 0.454" ball seems to work very well, cuts a nice ring of lead on loading,

what size ball to use (exactly)

I purchased a .454 mold, and a box of .454 lead balls, both worked just fine, I have the 44 Uberti 1861 colt and it is quite accurate with the .454 round balls, hits the target ever time dead center.....

fore end falling off of musket

I have this recently made Italian zouave musket and the brass fore end cap fell off, the barrel bands are very loose and the fore-end just falls off, looks like previous owner glued the fore end to the barrel with some furniture/wood glue, and left the barrel bands sloppy. Is there a better...

I was suspicious because it shot an 12-18" group at 50 yards

    are bores tapered ?

my new rifled musket muzzle loader seems to have a tapered barrel, the 58 caliber minie balls are snug for the first 12" or so, then they slide down easily to the bottom of the barrel (32"), I am getting ready to take it apart and do some measurements, seems odd to me, are rifled musket...

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

good idea, save you the trouble of making bullets out of battery lead.

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

yes, you are right, its not lead, it looks more like iron, the plates turn brown when heated, no lead appears when heated. the cell jumpers and terminals are lead, but not the plates.

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

after smoking Marlboros for 35 years, I dont think dismantling one battery is going to make it much worse.

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

I recently came across 58 lbs of #8 shot, a life time supply of casting lead, NO MORE car batteries for me !

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

I got about 5 minie balls out of it, not much, was a waste of time I guess live and learn

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

I took apart an AGM motorcycle battery and had no trouble taking the plates out and neutralizing the acid, but the plates would not melt, it was so strange, the posts and the cell jumpers melted nicely into good clean lead, but the plates would not melt, they just turned into a mush of red...

how do you tell a Pieta from a Uberti ?

I just bought a clean, used 1860 colt army, no box, no papers, cannot tell if it's a uberti or pieta, brass trigger guard, color case hardened frame and ram rod, blue barrel does anyone know how to distinguish the two ?

    New member with a problem

one thing you could to is take it to a machinist or gun smith and ask them to remove the nipple with an ez-out, that might a avoid drilling which might hit hte cylinder,

what size ball to use ?

I have ordered the .454 casting mold and have not bought any pre made balls yet, will see how the cast .454 balls work

what size ball to use (exactly)

If I could find a 0.452 ball or mold I would go with that, but dont see any now, I may just go for the 0.452 bullet mold and shoot some of those too, for starters will use the balls .
  18. andy2175m4

what size ball to use ?

I now have a Uberti 44 cal. revolver and I measured the chamber bores with my caliper, all six were exactly 0.450" should I order the Hornady 0.451" round balls or the Hornady 0.454" round balls ? those seem to be the only balls that are close,
  19. andy2175m4

what size ball to use (exactly)

Since I like casting my own bullets , I will try the 0.451 Lee first and see how it goes (look out Pale Rider)

what size ball to use (exactly)

I tend to think that a Lee .451 with a bit of hot hand-held mold tolerance, (a mil or two) that might be just the right size.... And a store bought .454 will give a good swage too, so if there is a .451 mold available that will work. thanks for the input.
