Has anyone used a ferrorod as a flint?

Hello all. I have a replica 1768 short land brown bess I use for deer and birds and everything in between recently ran out of viable flints. I tried quartz and some other rocks I found randomly some worked once but only once. I had an old wall clock made of agate so I smashed it with a hammer...

12 gauge rifled slug out of Bess?

I was thinking it might be good for getting rid of fouling? Or is that just stupid. Iron oxide has gotta be softer than steel no? And yes of course much more abrasive. I'm new to this please forgive me I'm pretty ignorant.

12 gauge rifled slug out of Bess?

Yes sir! I ran out of ammo awhile back. I have a 3 lb bucket of #2 steel shot i bought at a yard sale im still pretty apprehensive to shoot it. I don't wanna wear out my barrel after all. I let some rust a bunch accidentally and realized hey is that a good idea would it make it less apt to hurt...

12 gauge rifled slug out of Bess?

Hello everyone, third ever post here. I am wondering if its a good idea to shoot 12 gauge rifled slugs out of my short land Bess. Its kind of just like a minie ball, no? Had a slug dud on me last year so I cut it open and took out the slug. It *just* fits down the barrel its not tight if the...

How can I (or, can I? ) repair my broken Bess ramrod?

How can I (or, can I? ) repair my broken Bess ramrod?

She was quite shiny when we got her but figured she'd look better with some patina. Make her look old, no? She's an Indian made musket. Bought through Loyalist Arms out of Nova Scotia. I proofed it with 350 grains of powder and 2 .715 balls. No problems. Except for the ramrod. Damn.....

How can I (or, can I? ) repair my broken Bess ramrod?

Hello everyone. I recently broke my ramrod on my repro 1768 short land bess after an especially rough day of fouling. It was my fault. I shouldn't have forced it. I should have cleaned it earlier. Anyway it's done now I ordered 2 more from Loyalist Arms but until then is there anything I can do...

Repurposing small cal ammo for my Bess

It does clean the bore super clean so he has a point I think it is kind of abrasive. Give him a break he's looking out for our best interests

Repurposing small cal ammo for my Bess

True. According to the story it wasnt his first time doing it though he k ow what he was doing.I can see it it makes perfect sense. It would be safe for the shooter.

Repurposing small cal ammo for my Bess

I'm probably bad to ask though I use scouring pads with isopropyl alcohol to clean my bore. I realized that if I swabbed with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry it forms a black oily protective coating I know it is totally not what one is supposed to do but I find it works for me.

Repurposing small cal ammo for my Bess

It cleans the bore quite nicely actually, scrapes the fouling out so it must be abrasive but doesnt appear to hurt the barrel at all

Repurposing small cal ammo for my Bess

hanshi Thanks man. I wont use any nails. I read somewhere soldiers used to ram a nail in their musket balls. Seems excessive I don't know if it makes sense. I cast pewter balls though lighter they seemed to work. I ran out of ammo so I am willing to try anything right now. The shops are closed...
