Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Yeah, even aluminum has a 1,200F melting point, so I would still be several hundred degrees below, even at 850F, and by the time the lead is in the mold, it'll be cooler. And that's plain old aluminum, not an alloy. I'd assume this would be a 7075 alloy of some sort, if not something tougher.

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

I knew from the outset that I wasn't going to be going with a Lee. The simple fact that it's $30 made me flinch. Yeah I'd love it if molds were that cheap, but considering pretty much every other option was around $80, several alarm bells started ringing. I don't really want a disposable mold. I...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

And I'm assuming you run the lead into that mold very hot? This is what I really wanted to hear. I might just end up getting one of those molds, and I'll keep an eye out for a lyman. But if there's one available, and it's right in line price-wise with all the other molds I've seen (when you...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Okay here's my question to you regarding these. As an engineer, I like steel, especially where heat is involved, and especially compared to aluminum where heat is involved. Have you ever had issues with aluminum being so much softer than steel when it's being used as a mold? That's the big thing...

Oh come on now you just added that to rub it in lol

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

He has repeatedly yelled at me for not getting lodgewood bullets. And he's right so he better keep doing it lol. I may try bottom pour, but get a ladle in case I can't get them to come out right. And I'll be damn sure the mold is hot, including the core pin. I really do very much appreciate...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Frankly, I'm going to try to not buy any more. For the cost of 300 bullets ordered online, I can have all the equipment I need, and enough lead to cast 300 bullets. It's kind of a no brainer.

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

There's the lodgewood! Yeah any more that I order are coming from lodgewood. Though hopefully I'll be casting before i get any more. Oh I know that mold isn't for sale. Lyman IS currently accepting back orders on them. Trying to decide if that's worth it. I also have notifications turned on...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

I heard that making sure the mold is heated really helps. I'm very much assuming you've done that, I believe someone mentioned you're N-SSA so I basically am assuming you're a casting god. And 800F is what sounds like the necessary temperature for the lead before pouring. I'll have to experiment...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Not my casting. Bullets ordered from track of the wolf (preparing for someone to yell at me for not ordering from lodgewood). I'm going to cast my own eventually, but that'll be a bit later on. I've been reading about the ways to help reduce those cavities when I cast my own.

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Oh I know how to sight in a rifle. My understanding is that these traditional rifles (it's a pedersoli springfield 1861) legitimately shoot this way, that the sights are set in such a way that they arc high. From what I've read, more than a few musket rounds were sent over the heads of the...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

Thank you for the tip! I just wanted to make sure! Those bullets will be the ones I use right at the beginning. My understanding is I'm going to need to aim low. So once I've got a better idea where the gun shoots, hopefully I'll only have those without cavities left! This is my first black...

Bubbles in the base of cast minies

So obviously having a bubble like the one in the attached picture will reduce accuracy. My question is, is firing a minie with a bubble like this unsafe at all? Would the pressure lead to the bullet breaking up and leaving fragments behind at all? So long as they're safe to fire, I'm going to...

Minie Sizing, Before or After Lubrication?

Not worried much about the force to get it through. The sizer coming should work in and with my Lee press. So if I can't get it through, I'm in some big trouble 😬

Lyman 575-213 old vs new style in springfield 1861

Awesome, thank you for this! I have a couple of the old style bullets coming as well, and I'll measure and size them and run them against the new style ones I have (any ones that size down well). I'm going to start with 45 grains of 2F, then work my way towards 60, and perhaps eventually run...

Minie Sizing, Before or After Lubrication?

This is exactly the info that I was looking for. Which 575213 mold do you use, though? Do you use the old style or the new style? Making my own lube has been a blast for sure. I just used lard in place of the tallow, otherwise it's the same. My barrel pin gauged at .577, so I'm running them...

Minie Sizing, Before or After Lubrication?

Sizer is still coming unfortunately. My big concern is, if I'm squeezing it down .015, what's going to happen to the lube grooves? I'm kind if assuming it's going to make them non existent. I just don't have the experience to know how little groove is too little groove. The rule in modern guns...

Minie Sizing, Before or After Lubrication?

What mold do you use? I'm thinking about a lyman 575-213OS at this point.

Minie Sizing, Before or After Lubrication?

My barrel is .577 (tested with pin gauge). Is a minie that came .590 even able to see sized car enough down, or should it go to a pile to be melted down once I get casting? What mold do you use? I've been considering a lyman 575-213OS, I figure the lighter bullet should be a little more easily...
