    How old are ya?

80 and my wife and I still camp Primitive. We’re out west where it’s all on large ranches with 4/5 day rendezvous and trail walks. Being older we have cut down to about 6/8 a year plus monthly shoots. Doc,

    Starting fires with patches

Siringo, out west most of our shooting is done on large ranches. We’re shooting trails over dry leaves and twigs. We have lost one site due to a fire which almost got away caused by a grease (bore butter) patch. If a spit patch is smoldering that person is not getting it wet at all. At many...

    Starting fires with patches

Out west we’re dry 3/4 of the year. At most all our rendezvous at shooters meetings it well be announced zero grease patches allowed. Either water soluble oil or spit patches only. Water soluble oil is sold by some traders as 3 rivers or 7 rivers. Also available at most any machine shop. An easy...

My 20ga can shoot .600 round balls all day long fairly accurately as long as It’s patched. I’m sure yours could also. Doc,

    The ideal smoothbore hunting bag??

Because I’m used to shooting out of my pouch. Using a measure and shot snake is no big deal. Also using wonder wads, two over powder and one over shot gives a great pattern and easy and fast loading in my Damascus double. Doc,

WANTED All the lead seems to have disappeared :(

The cost is $0.10 to $0.15 for an absolutely perfectly swedged round ball which I can purchase for my 45 50 and 54. On a trail walk of 30 shots it may cost me $3.50. Compared to the cost of the gun, gas, registration the $3.50 is nothing. Why should I spend my valuable time making imperfect...

    WANTED Tow

Tow and/or grease patches can start fires. At Little Butt Mountain Men rendezvous they lost the use of the property shortly after a tow caused fire. At the shooters meeting everyone was told not to use any. But some just don’t care. On a range it may be acceptable but definitely not on a trail walk.

    Double barrel shotgun

11Bravo., The answer to your question is unknown to me. Other than to say I have 3 early English SxS . One is a 11ga and two are 13. Why, is something we may never find out for sure. If someone really knows the answer I would truly I like to know. Doc,

Can you get 3 aimed shots a minute?

No Answers, out west we have Fort Shoots at every rendezvous for over 30 years that I know of. Also we have BP silhouette shoots at various ranges every month for another 30 years. There has never been a problem. The only problem exists for shooting blanks such as these re-enactments back east...

    Double barrel shotgun

Feltwad, It happens I’ve got a couple of doubles that for some reason NEED a 1/5 in. fiber wad, because without it the center of my becomes almost empty. No idea why but it happens. Doc,

    Double barrel shotgun

Trans Yank, Unfortunately there’s never a perfect answer. A 11ga 12 and a 13 I have needs a thick card 1/5 in fiber wad and then a thin card. My other 5 I use Ox Yoke wonder wads. Two over powder and one over shot. Makes for easier and faster reloading. Pattern your gun and find out what it...

    Double barrel shotgun

Trans Yank, Yes, 65 gr of 3F and 1 1/8 is basically a square load ,but I use it because I get a great pattern with it. The same with my pheasant load of 90 gr and 1 1/4. Another reason is because I can get a higher velocity with 3F. Therefore a greater chance of a hit. Doc,

    Double barrel shotgun

My wife and I have quite a few Damascus doubles in 11 and 13 ga. For them we purchased 11 and 13 ga. components from “The Gun Works” in Springfield Or. As for our loads in all of them we use 3F for clays 65gr. and 1 1/8 of 8. For pheasant 90 gr of 3F and 1 1/4 of 8 Bismuth since we live in Ca...

Can you get 3 aimed shots a minute?

At rendezvous out west many of us have learned to shoot 3 aimed per ,minute, shooting out of our bag. Most rendezvous have a Fort Shoot with 25/35 knock down steel targets with a 3/4 man team. It’s not really that hard. Doc,
