    Were relatively poorly constructed knife sheaths like this common in the 18th/19th Centuries?

    These 2 are an example of early 1900's late 1800's . The larger kinde sheath is most likely a repair of an older sheath. As the small stitch holes can be seen where the leather was puckered up.

    As far as my research would go as the makers mark is only partial. This is a English Bowie hunting knife.

    Well one that's not a hunting knife. I venture to say that was a nice kitchen knife at one time. A corset stich would have been the norm. While the metal is quite dark, if it was cleaned up a little you might find the Maker's Mark on it.
