Informative and interesting video of early American gun flints

I found this video to be very interesting and informative. Straight forward and no fluff or silliness. If you're not interested in the history of early American flints you can skip to 9:43 in the video where he trys and compares, English flint, French flint, Chert, Quartz, and glass. Enjoy.

How many shots in a row without picking or wiping pan ?

Just wondering how many consecutive shots you've made with out picking touch hole or wiping pan or frizzen , just load and shoot. On a fairly dry day I've got 15 shots before my first flash in the pan with my Traditions Kentucky. On a more humid day is was like 6 shots.

Odd results; bench vs. offhand shooting

Had a nice windless overcast day today, so I got a chance to shoot my Traditions Kentucky flintlock. From the bench at 50 yards I shot a lack luster 4 1/2" group of five shots. Now I'm not the greatest shot with a flintlock but this was a bit disappointing. I tried a five shot group from an...

JB Flintlock , instructional videos for beginners

Came across this guy on YouTube. The production value is a little low, reminds me of 1980's public access TV, but I like it . No fluff, no loud intro music, no over the top persona, just straight forward how to videos for people new to the hobby. I know some here think YouTube, like electricity...

Silicon gun sock for storing muzzleloader ?

My daughter got me a couple gun socks for my muzzleloaders, They are the Remington brand "silicon cotton gun socks " . They fit good and will keep the dust off them, but I was told they can trap moisture and cause rust. Any thoughts or opinions ? -Thanks

    Rubbing magnesium on frizzen ?

Bumped into a fellow flintlock hunter this season and as we talked he mentioned that he rubs his frizzen with magnesium with one of those fire starter sold at camping supply stores. He claims it gives him an increased shower of hot sparks for 5 shots or so and said it was just for extra...

How long before a touch hole needs replaced ?

Just curious if anyone has worn out a touch hole liner and has had to replace it ? Not so much on an older well used gun but, one that started off new. I would it would take several hundred shots if not more. -Thanks

Ideal single trigger pull weight ?

What are your thoughts on what the ideal trigger pull weight should be on a single trigger rifle ? I realize a lot of that depends on its use, i.e. hunting rifle, target rifle, general use. etc. and the shooter behind the gun. But for a general use/ hunting /wood walks rifle; what's your...

Lock lube; oil or grease ?

What is preferred when lubing the moving parts of the lock ; oil or grease ? It would seem the tumbler and tumbler axis should get a light smear of grease, along with the sear engagement. However I've been told never to use grease in the lock, oil only ; except frizzen foot, It gets grease. What...

Adding a fly to single trigger lock ?

Working on polishing/smoothing up the lock on my Traditions Kentucky rifle. It is a single trigger rifle but came with the tumbler used in the double/set trigger locks so I'm going to go ahead and add a bridle to give the tumbler more support and smooth out the hammer. The tumbler accepts a fly...

8 to 9 BHN lead to hard for round ball casting ?

I had some lead given to me of unknow origin. I can mark/scratch with my thumbnail but using the "pencil test" it shows it being in the 8 to 9 BHN range on the hardness scale. I know pure lead is best, but this stuff was free, and the guy thinks he has more. Considering the patch/roundball...

Rubber muzzle covers when hunting ?

Are these rubber muzzle caps safe to shoot off as claimed or do they need to be removed prior to shooting ? Is there any difference in point of impact or accuracy ? It's always so damp when hunting in the mornings , do these make a difference ? What are your thoughts ? -Thanks

Check your CCI caps before you buy

I remember reading some posts from guys that got caps that were discolored or corroded or failed to fire. Looks like it's still an ongoing issue. I checked mine from walmart and they look good. Just passing the info. along. Maybe CCI will contact Ethan and get some more information. *As...

    Islamic doglock musket

This popped up on youtube today and thought some might find it interesting . He claims it to be an original Islamic doglock musket in .69 caliber. Seems to be in very good condition for something from the 17th century . Anyone think this might be a repro from the 19th or 20th century ? I found...

    Pritchett bullet ?

Watched a short documentary on the British Enfield 1853 rifle and they talked in depth about the paper patched Pritchett bullet used by the British as an alterative to the Minnie ball of the time. Made into paper cartridges, the smooth sided hollow based bullet had a lubed paper patch that was...

Caps at local Walmart if you really need them

Stopped by the Warsaw Walmart today and they had #11 CCI caps in stock, $5.62. They are on the bottom shelf locked up behind glass with the ammo, really had to look for them. I suggest if you'd like to buy some you jump over the "employee only" counter and begin banging in the door while loudly...
