In search of a foraging gun

Been busy with work and life. Got hit with a cold this week and just now having enough time to get back to this thread. I ended up going with a Pedersoli Brown Bess carbine - I looked at several percussion pedersolis SXS, though. The deciding factor for me ended up being that I wanted to dive...

    Brown Bess frizzen gouge

This is shimmed with two match sticks broken in half (4 total pieces). This seems to help the frizzen open with less resistance. I think the frizzen spring or mainspring may be a bit heavy.

    Brown Bess frizzen gouge

Recently I bought a brown Bess carbine (pedersoli) and noticed it has some gouging issues(?). I'm new to flintlocks and I'm unsure if this level of cutting is normal. The frizzen throws an excellent shower of sparks, though. I'm just worried this gouging is abnormal and prematurely wearing the...

Ramrod for a Pedersoli Indian trade musket

Ooof, I'll offer an idea that isn't a lecture. Call up Track of The Wolf and talk to them - I'm sure they are familiar with both replacement ramrods and the originals. If nothing else they may have a caliper and a ramrod and be willing to get you a measurement.

SOLD Antique .32 Plains Style Rifle

Do you offer free marriage counseling vouchers with each purchase? If I buy another gun my better half may kick me to the curb for "a better model". 🤣

This one will last as long as a snowflake on the face of the sun.

    Cheap northwest trade gun

I've never handled a India made gun, but most people who own them state that they are fairly reliable. The issues I've encountered in my research tend to stem from soft frizzens and/or lock work needing to be done at some point in the locks life. If you're willing to send a lock off to be worked...

Model 1816 Contract Musket by M.T.Wickham

I'll give you price of shipping and tree-fitty since you don't know what to do with it haha. (Joking) I'd clean it thoroughly and leave it as is. Reminder, 1816 muskets were made to be (semi) interchangeable and as such wood to metal fit may not be perfect. Stocks also shrink with time as they...

SOLD COOKSON Marked New England Fowler

It is. Seller said it's from MVTCO, that's considered to be one of the better India made gun finishers, though.

    WANTED Reliable beginner flintlock

Hello all, I'm looking for a reliable smoothbore flinter and figured I'd leave a post here for what I'm looking for. I'd prefer a Fowler or trade gun, but really I'm looking for something reliable to cut my teeth on (for flintlock). It may be a shot in the dark to find someone willing to part...

    Questions about IMA

I think that's where buying one of their complete guns has an advantage. They've cleaned them up and have done a lot of the foot work for you. I may still have to send the lock off to someone more capable, but the lock should be serviceable to some degree. The barrel is the wild card in my...

    Questions about IMA

Additionally, I suppose I could have a barrel made for it that would allow it to be a shooter and keep the original barrel for display. I assume that I would need to send the original off so that one could be worked up to fit the stock without additional fitment. Thoughts?

    Questions about IMA

These replies really do help. Seeing what actual owners think of them is a tremendous help. I'd be cautious to shoot this one more than a handful of times a year - I'd likely never shoot a full power charge out of it. The reason I ask about shoot-ability has more to do with the product quality...

    Zouave

It's mind boggling how far inflation and valuation of goods has come. They probably viewed them much the same way we view the M-14 or M1's today.

    Questions about IMA

I could definitely see that being the truth and thank you for sharing that. I was under no impression these were original British made firearms. I figured they were contracts for EIC by Indian makers (or, I suppose Nepalese). Their description of the barrel reads as such "Barrel made by the...

    Questions about IMA

Interesting that some question the origin. Still they seem decently made from what I can gather (originally, before they sat for 150 years). I suppose one should ask if they believe these are worth the asking price? They are certainly more affordable than almost any original Bess in half decent...

    Questions about IMA

Right, this will be something to collect and occasionally shoot. I would choose hand select and ask for a barrel they believe to be in best condition. I figure locks can look bad, be operable, and be safe - barrels are where most of the concern is at. Without getting into politics, I'm looking...

    Questions about IMA

Has anyone handled or ordered from IMA? I've been eyeing a few of their EIC 1771 Bess's, but at $1300 they claim they are not intended for firing and won't do inspections verify barrels, etc. Is this just a legal loophole they are using to avoid liability? I've seen people online shooting them...

    Brown Bess -Why

You're missing the whole point that I am making in regards to this thread. I agree, if you want a fusil or trade gun - then buy that. The question that was asked was why they are so popular. My original comment in the thread explained that it was a common gun because it was set up better as a...
