What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

The truth is that I tried Minies, Lee Real conicals and ball loads. The round ball gave the best groups. I have had great results on deer with the 50 cal round ball so I have no concerns with the 58. Next summer I will do more testing with conicals, I would like to try them on game. I'll post...

    About your hunting rifles

For hunting I favor the Hawkin type rifle. I mostly hunt in heavy cover so the short barrel helps. My current gun is a 50 cal flintlock TC Hawkin. It's a first year of production gun and the previous owner did some nice carving on it. Ironhand

    How do you hold?

Usually B for a bead, A for a blade, 6 o'clock for target guns, COM for hunting. Not really fond of the blade type rear for hunting. It covers too much of the animal. Ironhand

    Tomahawk block ideas

Clay pigeon hung from a nail on the end of a log. Showy and very satisfying. Depending on how tough you want to make it, you can use the mini clays. IronHand

    Carrying a pistol

I have carried a back up pistol when deer hunting ever since I could legally do so. {44 years} Carried a wide array of different guns. Nowadays I often carry a cap and ball revolver. Either a stainless 1858 or a Colt metropolitan police. As to why : you don't carry because you know that you...

    HOW RURAL IS RURAL?

If you think that, then you have never been to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Truly God's country. In other states people go out of state for vacation. In Michigan we just go to the U.P. Ironhand

Whats your favorite muzzleloader you own?

I have a number of different ML. Repro and custom. If I was told that I could only keep one it would be this one. Iron mounted 62 cal trade gun by Jackie Brown. It may not be the best at any one thing but it does everything well. It's the last gun I would ever part with. IronHand

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

A friend once asked me "why do you shoot BP? A modern gun is easier." I told him that I shoot BP because it's harder. I enjoy the challenge. I like the tinkering and research required. Nostalgia and love of history play a part but it is the challenge that draws me. I have shot deer at over...

54 caliber, not so odd any more?

54 was more common in the 80s. The dominance of the 50 was primarily driven by the gun makers, especially the {then new} in lines. Offering only one size of bore and ammo raised profits by limiting manufacturing costs. After a while all you could easily find was 50 cal. I shot 54 for years. I...
