Very stuck minie ball, tried everything having to pull the breech plug

I agree that the minie is covering the vent also being an original rifle the chamber is likely badly pitted and the ball is swaged into the pits from the seating procedure locking it in place.. remove breach plug to clear it.

    Round Ball Tumbling With Graphite

If your loading bare balls the the graphite would be a good idea, if you are patching those balls it wont help one bit, better maybe to put the graphite on the patch where it will do more good. Otherwise it just improves the finish when tumbling.

    Bacon Grease

Yer right! the results of having a pork fat lube far outweighs any rusting that might occur when you are using it in a zombie attack situation. Merry Christmas.

    Bacon Grease

And a Merry Christmas to all as well from Canada. Yes, I save my pork fat too (unsalted) use it as a component in my own boolit loob. Some don't like it at all but it works great for me and my buddies. Peace be with you all forever, God Bless.

    Lead ingots

Yeah for sure, those blackboards were some heavy, needing plenty of counter balance.

    Lead ingots

These likely came from an old school. If they where cast iron they were for windows, lead was used for the 'double chalk board' system where you raised the outer board up exposing the next board underneath. They were sometimes square in shape.

    Spring tempering.

The brine solution for hardening water quentiable steel is definately the way to go, I temper my springs in my casting pot which is controlled by a P.I.D. at 750 deg.

50/50 Dawn dish soap and water patch lube

I guess i'm getting old and worn out, my spit don't work so good any more so I tried the Dawn and water stuff. all I can say it works, after a 5 shot burst the muck comes out with one patch and leaves the bore nice and slick. Bud

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

I use the same sort of system in cleaning my M/L's ect. instead of the ammonia I use Hydrogen Peroxide all equal parts. Swab it out, dry patches and oil. Done till next weekend and we do it all over again. FYI beware of the Murphys oil substitutes, they make a goo out of the mixture.

    Round ball spin.

I agree, a soft lead ball will obturate upon fireing the charge creating a wide driving band to engage the rifleing providing the twist rat is not to fast, eg.1:60.

    Musket nipple conversion

Isn't that the skirt thing that little girls wear at recitals?
  17. ibud38

Bullet stuck in barrel - with a twist

Reason it jammed when pulling it out is because the excess patch bunched up ahead of the ball and jammed it. Just ram it back down and remove the nipple, put as much 4f or 3f in there as you can and reinstall the nipple, it will come out.

Very very nice indeed, although my hands and fingers no longer allow me to craft such quality pieces I truly understand the work and love that goes into it. I used to make knives under the 'Custom By Young' logo and enjoyed every minute of it. I now try to collect as $$$ and wife permit. Just...

Yeah, I've been trying to keep track of them as I come accross them on auctions ect. I've recorded (10) so far s/n's ranging from 1xx to 9xx including mine s/n 578. Kinda rare I would suspect. It is reffered to as a '50 cal.' but a .476 conical works perfect. B.
