1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

I’ve been able to engage the half cock protrusion each time I’ve tried, but it doesn’t engage always the first time. It almost engages, but slips off. If I mop up any oil around the protrusion it can then grip the half cock. It’s touchy.

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

Here is a photo of the lock back on the gun and holding in the half cock position. The flint was removed because I did a lot of soaking in penetrating oils. After various scrubbing tools and soaking up the rust with paper towels etc. I found I couldn’t get the half cock protrusion to kick out...

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

Finally got the lock off again. The half cock is a rounded protrusion back of the ledge for the full cock foot to sit on. That protrusion is on the same spring as the foot ledge. I’ve been able to get the hammer to hold on this half cock position intermittently. I’ve used break free and other...

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

Thanks. This is very helpful. Haven’t been able to take the lock off today - dental appointment and major snowstorm. A quick check a minute ago seems to show that half cock #8. Will work on loosening it up tomorrow. I guess from your comments that the musket should have been advertised on the...

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

When I had the lock off and was cleaning it I manipulated the cock at one point and it seemed to catch in a half cock position. I couldn’t see how it was held and couldn’t replicate it when the lock was back on the gun. I’ll explore this further. I agree that it needs a half cock position to...

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

Thanks for that information. Was the “backing” leather wrapping or something else?

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

Here is a short video of the gun with a flint firing and a photo of the hammer jaws and flint. I put my largest flint in a lead wrap and clamped it down to show enough flint to spark, but there is a very large space back to the jaw screw. Does anyone know how this was set up traditionally? The...

1770 Spanish escopeta miquelet lock musket

I got this musket at an online auction in Ontario several weeks ago. It was delivered by the auction house yesterday in person since Canada Post is enduring a lengthy strike. The description from the auction site is as follows Description Spanish. Last quarter 18th century. The part-octagon...

Welcome from across the border in Ontario. Visited Finger Lakes in my 20s and did my one and only hang gliding from a hill. Beautiful area.

    The Spanish Miquelet musket

Thanks a lot Rick. I’ll definitely take photos when I get it and have a chance to explore it. Here are a couple of other photos from the web. The lock seems to have the text Ernaro on it and the date 177? From my brief searches the only hit I get on Ernaro is a populated town in East Timor...

New to me: Le Page Reproduction

Yes. It is a 44 cal pistol. I have a boxed pair. Jukar. It takes a .430 round ball and .10 patch and still takes whamming it down. I just had one of the pistols out at the range a week ago for the first time. With 30 grains of fff at about 15 yards it shot very low. Mine has an adjustable rear...

Need Help Identifying This Heavy Behemoth!

Does anyone know what the winged protrusion is on the left side of the gun? My rifle has an empty hole in a slightly lower spot. No idea what it was for.

I’m thinking with the sling it is a Jaeger. Here is a picture of one I got from the same time period . Bottom rifle.

The Tenuous Future of Living History

There is an amazing guy in northeastern Ontario who has been recreating a 1750s persona and building structures, birchbark canoes and accoutrements for over three years and posting weekly videos of hi quality. Having completed a log cabin, blacksmith shop, food catch, etc. He is now building a...

    Back into antiques…

I enjoy shooting the few antiques I have. My photo to the left is one that required a new tumbler shaft to be brazed in. The rest was in pretty good condition. Shoots well, but not as good as the German pistol that was auctioned without a hammer. Tracked it down in England. It has a hex shaft on...

    Escopetas again

Imagine my surprise when this showed up in an online Ward’s auction in Alberta a couple of years ago. Never saw one in my last seven years of following auctions. Advertised as 54 caliber likely a kit gun. I got it and got the lock working fine although it didn’t until cleaned up and oiled a bit...

    Western Arms Corp. 1860 Army

Thanks for the information. When the gun is cocked it has the Colt four click which I’m told Ubertis also have but not Piettas. Part of my reason for referring to the pistol as a Frankenpistol is I thought maybe the frame was Uberti but the cylinder and maybe the barrel might be Pietta as...
