What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I made 2 priming horns from bleached out, cracked , & weather Buffalo horns. I had to cut them shorter, fix cracks using glue & sanding dist from pieces I cit off.. glued in plugs of Rhododendron from my yard. I've got to pin the plugs, & they're done.

    Thompson Center questions

Oersonally, for that price, it's a fair deal. The guns WORK. It might not pass by some stitch counter, but from a shooting perspective, the thin, no matter what you don't like, you can find parts to change them. I found one with fiberglass rod, fiber optic sights, it's a great hunter. Old eyes...

    Cleaning between rounds

A At the range?? Between every shot.. hunting? When I'm done.. there's no need to hammer a ball down the pipe when passing a brush a couple times can prevent that.. at the range I have a routine I stick to so I never dry ball or double charge. The process starts with the bore brush on a rod...

    Making paper cartridges-my solution

I Shoot cigarette paper, not all of it blows out the barrel, some stays smoldering in the chamber, & the amount of crud is terrible.. I load without any paper cartridge at the range.. paper cartridges & charges are for reloading if I carry 1 hunting...

What type of corn meal can i use? Also a question about chainfire. /Paper cartridges

"MUFFIN MIX" has wheat flour that can be ignited. I use cream of wheat, no super fine powder... if you don't shave lead sinking a round, lube on top of it. Make sure the caps fit the nipple tightly & correctly..

    Making paper cartridges-my solution

I roll my papers over a marker. (Cut cigarette paper) I fold over the end, but leave an opening. I used pieces of nitrated paper to cover the end. 15grn. Powder, 15grn. C.O.W., I never added the ball in until this time around. I glued it. I usually just make a charge pscket & pack a lubed ball...

    Shooting into......

RR ties don't allow small arms penetration & the round usually ricochet. I've had .50 balls from pistol, & C&B rounds land at my feet. Practicing draw & shoot @20ft from the backstop. I've noticed particle board/OSB over the ties really absorb energy & capture more rounds..

So I was about to pull the Trigger on a nice Uberti 1858 but I think I might change my mind...

I have cap & ball revolvers & flintlock pistols. It cost @ $12. to spend an afternoon shooting flints. The same amount of time with the cap guns costs @ $15. ... I bought a reloading stand for the revolvers. It takes a little longer, but with the cylinder out, it's easy to load.. no mistakes on...

new gun for me: Uberti 1851 Navy!

After you shoot, tear it apart & look for scarring. Where parts slide or touch. 1 of mine, the pawl that rotates the cylinder touched the arbor & made it hard to cock. A little filing & it's fine. The area of the pawls slide in the frame. The slides side are round, parts sliding is square &...

    Loading press

I bought a re-loading stand cheap. Ox Yoke. Under $40. It's not heavy duty, but works well. I have .44 & .36 .. you have to tear down with every re-load, but that allows you to run a brush thru the barrel. Loading powder, buffer ( cream of wheat) & ball all out of the gun is so much easier &...

    WASP NEST WADDING?

I've shot them.. tear the nest apart & throw away the larvae parts. Even the comb part will make wadding. I even carry some in my bad for a overshot wad..."paper" in the furtrade era was an expensive import..

    Dumping Ballistol and Gun Oil

Soa I use soap (Dawn ) water, & follow up with CLEAN oil.. I like 10w40... never had a problem.. once in a while I snatch a dipper of raw crude to use on my hunting guns.. the smell of raw crude is familiar in the woods, Hoppe's isn't a normal woods smell... if I can smell your cleaned gun on...

Current quality of the Italian makers

I've bought both. Both needed "slicking up". Both had scars where the machined edges touch or parts slide. The older Uberti ( bought 3yrs ago) needed less work than the others. The Uberti I just bought needed as much work a the Peitta I bought 4yrs ago.. for the money, I'd buy another Uberti. Or...

Colonial American recipes that are common today

Potatoes?? They are a new world vegetable, & nothing like the potato we know. Even corn in colonial days wasn't what it is now. Homany would be closer to correct. As for beans & peas, those weren't the vegetables you know either.. barley flour would've been more common in a colonial kitchen than...
