    1861 Enfield 'M' it seems. Never would have found it searching images at many sites (can't afford the many books referred to, will try to search with what you gave me. Thanks Found this: Confederate "M Rifle" Enfield Mine isn't the long rifle on that page and my hammer matches my lock plate...

    I had a couple great replies on my first post thanks a lot! M bears out perfectly as another reply stated why I couldn't find it in Springfield 1861, it isn't. Here's a couple pics of the stamps;

    Most obvious, no lockplate indentation for cone seat with matching embellished design matching hammer, date stamp reversed to ahead of hammer, Springfield stamp behind. Don't see any of those differences in hundreds of online images as an at a glance diff.

Has two barrel bands clamped with no strap hardware no sign of being replaced, no band springs, eagle behind hammer, 1861 stamp ahead of hammer, no strap attachment on trigger guard, 119 stamped behind guard plate behind, ring...
