    Black Powder Aluminium Flask?

Some time ago, I contacted RCBS about using their powder trickler with black powder. The return message from RCBS said "they do NOT recommend the use of their triclker for black powder because of static electricity". I hope they do testing before making public statements.

    Black Powder Aluminium Flask?

A letter to the reloading companies will clear up the use of aluminum around black powder. Some powder measures have cast iron bodies and some have aluminum parts that could be in contact with black powder. These measures are marked NO BLACK POWDER and in the manual too. One company advised me...

    Black Powder Aluminium Flask?

A person should consider static electricity when working around black powder.

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

I am attaching a powder table for converting black powder in grV to grW for use in my Hawken 54 caliber. You can see the items used in the header. Owners manual sets the maximum charge of 100 grV for FFg powder. Hopefully everyone knows that black powder expands and contracts with changes in...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

I have tried compacting a black powder charge. I keep going back to chemistry class and how to measure dry and liquids chemicals. Our class experiments were set up show the importance of proper measurement. In fact I try to eliminate any compression at all in the load. I use making a cake as an...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

Sorry -- I am into ballistics and have a private range to shoot on. I really enjoy measuring powder and shooting through a chronograph. I have the math and physics background to work with the data. Most people don't know that ballistics is a separate field in physics. Where the normal physics...

    Guesstimate my muzzle velocity?

I am using an Oehler Ballistic Explorer program. I have a 54 caliber with 230 gr RB. Using the Gs drag function and B.C. of 0.145. Here are the velocities. The Gs drag function is for round ball projectile, 0 25 50 75 100 125 150 175 200 225 250 Yards 1355 1228...

    Guesstimate my muzzle velocity?

When a shooter wants to use the crack method of measuring velocities, go to the Lyman Black Powder Handbook and chapter 14 Black Powder Fact & Fancy. The slipstream can cause the crack rather than the ball. This is why the chronograph is a better way of checking the velocity. I can understand...

    Guesstimate my muzzle velocity?

I have an Oehler 35P chronograph that I have used since 1987. I have shot many rounds, both modern and muzzle loading, without a problem. One MUST have extra distance to the start screen for a muzzle loader. I use 14 feet for a good velocity reading. I made a post a couple months ago for the...

Answer from the NRA Dope Bag

The Dope Bag has been a wonderful NRA benefit for me.

Answer from the NRA Dope Bag

Thank you for your response. I am learning more about guns every day. I have used the NRA techs for many years to answer questions for my classes along with the NPS living history section. Have a good day

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

I was told that the reason the front sight was back from the muzzle was to allow for recut and crown because of muzzle wear from ram rod.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

The gun world is very interesting. I enjoy traveling around and listening to the living history people and writing the NRA tech people. There is a lot to be learned about guns. I have used the NRA for several years to answer questions from my students.

Answer from the NRA Dope Bag

A few months ago I made several posts about the balls per pound bore measurement method. I wanted to take this step farther by asking how this ball is made. I told the NRA that I was interested in a time period of 18th and 19th century. The person would be a back woods gunsmith with little to NO...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

I thought I would show a test using a Cable's 54 caliber Hawken caplock rifle. Each powder increment had a standard deviation of 10 ft/sec or less. In this test, I had one powder increment at 7 ft/sec. This rifle had a maximum charge of 100 grV. 60 grV - 55.5 grW - 1224 ft/sec 70 grV - 65.1 grW...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

If you have noticed, I mentioned about the low standard deviation of 10 ft/sec for my powder charge increments. I worked on a loading procedure to get this for my increments. I did not want any overlapping standard deviation. Even thou one average velocity may be higher than the other, if you...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

I think very gun has its own personality. I use a chronograph for that reason. I take the manufacture's maximum charge and reduce it by 40 percent. Then increase the powder increment by ten percent to maximum charge. I never exceed the manufacture's maximum charge. I weight out five powder...

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

I am 77 yrs old. The body parts does NOT move like they use to is the problem. At my range, I shoot a little bit and talk a lot with the members. It is good to spend the day at the range and get out of the house.

    Muzzle velocity Hawken vs Longrifle

You are right. There is a point where the gain slows, go flat, or slightly goes down. That is what is interesting about testing. You can change calibers or barrel lengths and the results will be different. That is what makes a day at the range interesting. Good shooting
