Why do we use pillow ticking? What qualities make a good patch?

Thanks everyone for the input ths fr... Ive noticed guys find their patches on the ground t the range and upon discovering a neat hole in the middle they expressed frustration as if this were an undesirble outcome. It almost looks like a ball was shot through the patch but that makes no sense...

Do you have a muzzleloader with an inexplicable problem?

I chronically lose wedges. Like, almost every time I shoot, and sometimes even just handling my gun round the house. To the point where I have started running black electric tape around the stock and barrel to hold them in between shooting. This has helped but not cured the issue.

    Got My Elk Mount Back

I'm also taxidermist and will concur that Natalie did a fine job. I like that hard hook (turn), helps show more movement. You have a specimen and mount to be proud of for sure.

Why do we use pillow ticking? What qualities make a good patch?

Just curious why pillow ticking is the standard? Why not canvas or denim or muslin? What difference does it make? I understand the prerequisite that nothing synthetic be used s it would melt and gum up things... but beyond that, what's the difference as long as the ball is snug in the barrel...

Pic for attention as this is a WANTED POST. I would like to convert my Cabelas Hawken flint over to cap lock and am there for seeking the lock AND CLEANOUT PLUG. Even better than finding one to purchase would be finding someone who wanted to trade their percussion lock for my flinter. If I dont...

    Inexpensive Flintlock: Fun, or Frustration?

Love it when an 11 year old thread gets bumped haha. Obviously the bumper searched his rifle name and wasn’t paying attn to the date.

Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle?

Came across this gun broker listing… but it’s scant on details. Seems like a nice looking lock… but I readily admit to not being nearly as knowledgeable as many of you here… https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1063477600

I am an *****. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

I can't thank @ronaldrothb49 enough for helping me out. Nobody ever told me that bore butter was bad. A tube of it was included with my gun when I bought it. Why make a product and market it for muzzleloader shooters if its bad for muzzleloaders? I never claimed to be an expert or to even know...

I am an *****. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

yeah the information overload is a bit overwhelming ... I dont really know anyone personally who shoots traditional BP.... I just always thought it looked cool so I bought one and decided Id figure i out as I went. I did join a club but have only been to two of their monthly shoots, I hate to...

I am an *****. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

This is the type of patch I used and the puller I’ve got. That is a 50 cal ball for reference. In homesight I’m wondering if using a patch that big and fat is blocking the puller from getting to the lead.

I am an *****. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

Hey everyboy, I am here, alive... I got on and read everyones advice and decided to take a short break from the muzzleloader, and over the last few days I had a kids birthday party and moved 144 round bales from one farm to the other 8miles away.... On top of that, unlike most of my generation I...

I am an *****. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

I know what I did was stupid. I just got so frustrated and sick and tired of never being able to get things to work for me. I’ve tried 3 different powders. Every time I mess with this stupid gun I work my butt off and maybe get it to shoot a handful of times and it goes back to flash and...

Commenting so I can stay informed as I’m in the market for a full stock flint in that “better than traditions, but can’t afford a $1000+ rifle” range and have roughly the same budget to work. I have an invest arms Cabela’s Hawken flint I’m willing to trade for it.
