    Proper shot size/source

I’m not sure. I’ve done a lot of reading, and have come across comments stating that twist barrels are some of the weakest…and laminated are the strongest…compared to Damascus or twist.

Thanks very much everybody…I’ll just have to mess around with it I guess…get some 4,5, and 6 and just see. Rancocas, here’s a picture of the ol’ girl. And no, I haven’t heard of the Vintage Gunners…but I’ll look them up for sure. Barrels are Birmingham proofed mid 1800’s…and says...

Powder flask vs. powder horn? Any comments? One better than the other? Thanks, Dos

    Proper shot size/source

Thank you very much guys! Sounds like I need to get a hold of some #4 and #6 and that’s about it. This gun I’m using is an 1850’s/60’s twist barrel shotgun. Is there a particular type of softer lead shot that would be better for this gun over another? Dow

    Proper shot size/source

Guys, Still learning here, and I appreciate all the kind assistance. Forums like this are sure a valuable resource sometimes. I have a mid 1800’s twist barrel shotgun that appears to be sound enough to shoot, after cleaning and inspection. I’d like to use it for small game, squirrel...

    Shot/powder accessory recommendations

Hi guys, Before joining this site, I’d never had any black powder resources…other than an old neighbor showing a few very small things. I’ve target shot my black powder rifle plenty over the last 20 years as a novice…but now I have a shotgun, and have some questions. Target shooting at the...

Interesting…thank you for the information. Since reading your comment, I’ve been doing a fair amount of reading on the different barre types. I read somewhere that makers of the cheaper imported shotguns would sometimes label the barrels laminated steel, when in fact they were of twist steel...

Well..I took her in to the Puyallup Muzzleloading supply today and had Bill give her a once over. He said that although there is some pitting in the bore, it shouldn’t be anything I can’t clean up. He said that this gun hasn’t been shot very much, and that there is a lot of metal left in the...

Hi there… Thanks very much for the detailed information…it’s just what I was after. I also should have posted photos…although I did in another thread. Have included a couple now…showing the proof markings. They appear to be mid century Birmingham, another member has told me. That being the...

Yep…those are all good areas too…I just don’t live up there…so can’t really comment…I’m down south. Anywhere north, or south of Seattle is ok. East is good….Preston, Fall City, North Bend, Bellevue….

Thanks for the welcome! Auburn is VERY “iffy”. Some parts are ok, most parts these days are not. The crime rate has really gone up there, and there is a serious drug problem, but housing is affordable. I’m in Maple Valley…which is still respectable enough, and far enough out. Maple Valley...

    Potential mid 19th cent. Richards

Ok…good advice, thank you. I’m not in any kind of rush…so I’ll try cleaning her up and bit and see how it goes. And read up on how to properly load and fire it. I’ve been thinking that over actually…as it’s a lesser grade shotgun, it’s probably not worth sinking a bunch of $$$ into. For the...

Ha…ok…good one. If I live long enough to retire…I’m out of here…off the west coast! Secrets out though…Texas is already too popular and cool…too many non-Texans there…so I won’t be returning to my roots. We used to have 100 acres south of Grand Prairie where I grew up…cotton fields, beans...

Interesting…well I appreciate the information. Im not worried about the Damascus, just trying to learn and stay informed. I’ve dabbled in BP over the last 25 years…but never really dedicated any time to the hobby, but I am ready to now. I know how to shoot my BP rifle…but not so much this...
