    Ikea pine shooting box

Looks good but I'd end up overloading it to the point that it needed wheels.

    Gunshow score this weekend

I was set up selling knives at a small local gunshow this weekend. Walking the isles today I found 5, 100 rnd boxes of Buffalo Bore RBs for my 54 rifle and one box of .454 RBs for my revolvers. I paid $55 for the lot and while I could cast my own felt the purchase worth while. Saves my soft...

Kibler stocks OK for a lefty?

My understanding is Kibler uses CNC machinery. As all the unmentionable rifle manufactures found switching from right to left hand actions with CNC is fairly straightforward. However as long as Kibler can match his production capability with the market for right handed products he has no...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

If you get away from Hollywood and period photos with obvious studio props I think carrying more than one pistol was rare in the west. There are a few references to So and So carrying two pistols. Which implies that was an exception, not the norm. I can see a desire for a spare cylinder though...

Show N Tell your first MLer rifle

My first was not a rifle. It was a 58 caliber Belgian flintlock trade musket made in 1862. I bought it at a yard sale in the early 70s for $25. Hunted everything from deer to squirrel with it until I traded it for a Navy Arms 45 caliber flintlock rifle. Don't know why I thought I needed a rifle...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

Interesting thought. My suspicion though is that most of these cylinders were obtained in the field. From damaged revolvers.

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

Maybe then as now most gunfights were settled in 5 or less shots. A spare cylinder could have been wrapped in oilcloth and carried in a saddle bag. I'm not saying that I believe a cylinder swap would have happened in the middle of a fight. However there is also weather to consider. If it was...

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

But you have to let the historical evidence tell it's own story. Why so many loose, loaded cylinders if not carried as spares? Any extra gear takes energy to transport. You could probably carry an extra cylinder or two easier than a spare revolver.

I have to rethink the spare cylinder idea

Last week wife and I visited Cody Wyoming. Among others we visited the Museum of Relic Firearms. In his display cases were many loaded percussion cylinders which had been found without frames. I still don't believe cylinders were swapped out in the heat of battle or on horseback. But there we...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

No doubt many handguns were used by both sides. I'm also pretty sure that NB Forrest would have considered himself and his entire command to be cavalry, which I said was a possible exception. However most participants carried rifle muskets of some sort and I see no reason to think that the 10...

    .36 Colt Navy that powerful??????

No disrespect to Mr. Keith or anyone else but other than perhaps Cavalry troopers I doubt if very many ACW soldiers actually saw anyone shot with a pistol. I think the fondness of the Navy revolvers was largely that they were easier to carry and were powerful enough for close range work. The...

Saw an odd smoothbore in a LGS today

I didn't want to show too much interest, makes it harder to negotiate. He's only asking $225 but I'd like to see it closer to $200 cash. I'll be by his way Monday. My first ML was a flint Belgian trade musket I bought at a yard sale in the early 70's for $25. Used it for everything from...

Saw an odd smoothbore in a LGS today

Doing a 'net search I found several references to SPESCO branded percussion revolvers and one picture of a SPESCO musket. However the picture showed a back action lock and this example has a front action lock. The lock might actually be a Tower lock. My suspicion is that whatever Belgian...

Saw an odd smoothbore in a LGS today

At first glance I thought it was a copy of a generic ACW style rifle musket. Top of the barrel was marked SPESCO, Made in Belgium. Had a patch box similar to a 1804 Harpers Ferry, ribs along the trigger guard similar to some European muskets. Lock was marked Tower, 1861. Rear sight was a...
