    Got lucky in northern Michigan

It took all he had to stay on his hooves at impact. That ball tossed him around like a doll and spun him 180 degrees. But, he managed to stay upright and "run" about 70-80 yards. Thanks all for the kind words. It's nice to talk about things like this with fellas that know what they are reading...

    What's wrong with this doe?

I guess I'm not seeing anything abnormal with her. But, we have some huge does around central Mi. 130-150# dressed animals are common.

    Got lucky in northern Michigan

Nothing sounded or felt odd to me. It was as quick as a flint lock will ignite and plenty of boom behind it. I had just loaded the rifle that morning before walking out to hunt. The rifle was kept outside under my cabin porch the night prior so it wasn't sweating at all. It worked in the end...

    Got lucky in northern Michigan

Yes, he was quartering away about 20 degrees. Just got done putting him in the freezer. Interesting find was found. The ball somehow hit a rib and rolled around it perhaps. But, didn’t break it. can’t push a finger straight through the entry hole without wiggling around a rib. It’s a strange...

    Got lucky in northern Michigan

I was fortunate enough to squeeze the trigger on a northern Michigan deer. .54 cal, 80 grains of 3f and PRB. 45 yard shot. No ribs touched and no pass through. I saw a bulge on the off side and cut out the ball. I wasn’t happy about that. Where I hunt it is all pine needles, moss and lichen as...

    Nitro cards

Good thinking. I use a thin card over both. Works good. I’m sure yours will perform similarly.

    New TC Hawken sights

Yes, replace the rear sight entirely with the RMC sight. Very quick and easy to install. If your rifle is already tuned then its pretty easy to slide the peep into a perfect position with the front blade. A few shots to be sure and its good to go.

    Osage Orange for ramrods?

There's a story behind that I cant tell in detail on here. Let's just say I was picking on my very aged grandpa one day and he used that phrase to make his point :) I laughed so hard and never forgot it.

    Osage Orange for ramrods?

I've made several hundreds osage bows and a hundred more from every suitable wood in NA. Here is what I know for fact. It is incredibly strong in tension and compression. Strongest in NA. It's the most stable wood species in NA It is not abrasive It does not easily warp. No amount of oil...

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

Loved reading your post. Dad and I USED to process hundreds of deer and found all the same things you do/did. We had a girt on the wall that was just lined with bullets, broad heads, wire, plastic and even sabots, from those very close range shots. I was also amazed how many were hit by cars. I...

    My 12 ga shot load

The barrels were scrubbed, sanded and buffed clean and smooth. Degreased 3x with Dawn dish soap. I used BC Perma blue on them. Five coats got the darkness I wanted. I love a grey barrel, but turkeys have good eyes and figured a dark barrel would be better.

    My 12 ga shot load

Sorry, yes it was a 6mm CVA nipple and I chased the threads with a 1/4-28 and installed a TC nipple.

    My 12 ga shot load

Thank you. I ran a 1/4-28 tap into a 3 mm thread. It worked great and the 1/4-28 nipple threaded down tight and straight. The extra .014” was enough to re-cut the threads. I don’t plan on removing it, ever. Right or wrong, it worked for me this time.

    My 12 ga shot load

The targets are already recycled. Here are the barrels after I refinished them last Saturday. I refinished the wood months ago. I put new main springs in both locks and tuned them up, fixed a stripped nipple thread and tuned the triggers as well last weekend. She’s top shelf again.

    How to polish this sideplate

Would a wire wheel on a drill press be a good start? I use them to polish barrels up before bluing. This isn't the same, of course, but it may be something to try.

    My 12 ga shot load

I am new to throwing shot from a muzzle loader. So I naturally leaned on the Skychief load. It seems to work okay and I hunted it last spring. Yesterday I decided to play around more with all the cards and wads I have. In the end the tightest and best load I came up with was really quite simple...

Heaviest Bullets For .50 Caliber 48" Twist

The 385 Great Plains out of a .50 TC are crazy powerful. There is some kick back. But, I like recoil. It’s my #3 rifle, so chances of it hunting aren’t very high.
