    54 Caliber Woodsrunner Hunting Loads

I finally got some quality time at the range and was able to try the load development technique @Flint62Smoothie suggested in an older thread. Ironically his name doesn't come up in this forum for whatever reason. The first picture shows that 70gr FFF Swiss worked the best using a .530 PRB...

    "Polishing" Leather

For what it's worth, the bag took the mink oil fine and shed hardly any polish on my hand.

    "Polishing" Leather

Stressed or weathered would have been better terms to use in hindsight as I wanted to achieve a used look with a sheen. Probably unorthodox to do, but I remembered some "art" I learned in bookcamp 30 years ago and tried some black and brown Kiwi shoe polish wax with some heavy buffing with a...

    54 Caliber Woodsrunner Hunting Loads

Thanks for the advice on polishing the crown. I did notice the balls were very hard to start but then slid nicely even after several shots.

    54 Caliber Woodsrunner Hunting Loads

So if you saw my other post, I got a grand total of 6 shots of my first range session with the 54cal Woodsrunner before the frizzen broke. I wanted to just get some shots off before I got serious with load development, and so for all shots I used 90gr of Swiss with a .018 red ticking patch and...

    First Time Flintlock

I forgot to mention, Kibler has a series of YouTube videos that walk you through the process from start to finish. You'll be able to gauge for yourself if you could finish it in your apartment from these videos.

    First Time Flintlock

And I didn't even need a chisel, although I suspect that experience may vary. The Woodsrunner in particular was CNC manufactured and pre-fit to eliminate alot of the work, but still yield a nice flintlock. I could see finishing the Woodsrunner in an apartment.

Broken frizzen, is this a common thing?

Had it happen to me today at the range. Kibler answered the phone right away and a new one is all but on the mail, but it scared the hell out of me to have a piece of metal hit me on top of the head as the smoke was still clearing. Never had it happen before today.

    First Time Flintlock

For what it's worth, I just built a Woodsrunner kit and really didn't need to do it in my basement. There's a fair amount of sanding but if you can come up with a way to do that in your apartment the kit is more of an assembly than a build.

    "Polishing" Leather

My old man, RIP, made this leather bag for me when I was about 12 years old and it hasn't seen much use as I opted for a more modern bag in recent years to preserve the one he made in 1984. I just upgraded it with the arrowhead I bought in Utah on a backpacking trip with my son a few years ago...

    Ready for the Range

Thanks to everyone who helped me put this thing together, you know who you are.... The last of the parts came together this morning and not after some apprehension and adjustments. I started the kit during a two month drought here in the NE that ended with the last two weeks of much more humid...

Just Got My First Muzzle Loader

You should have to own a mass produced flintlock first so you truly appreciate the merits of misfires and hang fires! "Unfortunately", you are likely to never know the struggle. ;)

What's the consensus on Kibler rifles Steel finish?

I think you need to first ask yourself what you intend to do with the rifle. Target, wallhanger, hunter? I chose browning because it's highly durable and my Woodsrunner will likely see snow and rain throughout its lifetime.

    Building my first Kibler.

Hoping to finish the same gun in the specs you described this week or next. My stock came in darker than I wanted, but that just means you'll need to use something other than Aquafortis to get that red effect you want. The Jim Chambers oil I used definitely has a red tint to it, although it...

    Horrible experience with Plum Brown

So after 5 coats of Laurel Mt. Forge and a ban on going into the bathroom with a tub for two days, don't worry we showered in the bathroom with a shower stall, the barrel is looking much better and is currently soaking up the motor oil the online instructions said to apply for 24 hours. The...

    Horrible experience with Plum Brown

Adventures in browning take two...... Just put the first coat of Laurel Mt Forge on the barrel so we'll see how it goes. If you used this stuff before and have a picture of your barrel could you please post it and tell me how many coats you applied?

    Horrible experience with Plum Brown

Well it pained me to do it but I took your advice rchas and sanded the barrel back to raw metal. On my way now to get some Laurel Mountain. For reference, here's a picture of the Hawkins I browned with PB years ago. I guess the mercury they since removed did the trick in the old recipe from...

    Horrible experience with Plum Brown

I did..... followed the bottle closely. That's the depressing part. I used latex gloves instead of cotton.
