    Keeping an 1858 loaded indefinitely

I load 30 grains of 2F, custom lubed felt wad and .454 ball. I have left them for years and they go bang. Dry Northern Nevada.

    My Gift Arrived

Well I fell off the wagon today also. Built a Xtra fancy maple carved in March as my first flint in .54 and today I ordered #2125 quick ship in .45. May God help us all and thank God for Jim Kibler for people like me.

    Woodsrunner on the Way!

Me and my buddy, Lead Nuggets Both have them. They are great. Just got back from hunting with him in northern Nevada with him hunting antelope. He has shot a few times but they are smart creatures. Ranges 100- 175 with 100 gr 2F. I had to leave sick, but he will still get one. He got one.

    Kibler Carved Woodsrunner Wood Choice?

I thought I had ruined my stock at first but now I love it. Also love shooting it. It may not be perfect but it is MINE!

    1858 truck gun.

I have lived in the desert all my life so humidity is not an issue. In Nevada with 3-10 % being normal I have left 1858's loaded for years. They go bang every time. In 1997 I had my Ruger Old Army in my truck that had been loaded for well over a year and had to use it to pun down a wild horse...

    What is this 50cal worth?

Correct they were not period correct. I have 2 of the same rifle one in 50 and 54. Bought mine in 1977 when I turned 18 and both are very accurate. They both have killed a lot of deer also. I think it would be wise to keep it and shoot it,alot. It has a 1 in 66 twist for round ball. Either .490...

    Lubricated wads versus non-lubricated wads

I use my own punched 1/4" felt lubricated wads and leave my Ruger Old Army and my 1858's loaded for over a year at a time and they all go bang. Been doing that for over 30 years. I think the most I went was about 2 years before I fired it. Load and forget it.

    My completed Woodsrunner

80 GR 3F runs right at 1750 FPS in my runner.

    My completed Woodsrunner

Beautiful. Mine has the tall sight and shoots 80 GR 3F great. My buddy his has the tall sight also and he likes 90 GR 2F.

    Ball size

It depends on the gun. I have a CVA Hawken from the 80's in .54 that likes .535 with a .010 patch and will shoot either 80 grains of 3F or 90-100 of 2F. My woodsrunner runs .530 and 80 grains of 3F great with .018 pillow ticking patch. Read your patches.

    Getting there !

This is a very good idea. I shoot with lead nuggets almost every weekend with his Woodsrunner. He is very proficient in handgun, rifle and shotgun but new to flintlocks like me and he had a couple of flinches when a flint went bad. We may have to try that, priming or not each other's rifle.

    Just wanted to say Hello

    Hello from dusty Nevada.

    Getting there !

Thanks for all the good advice. I use the 3 grain dispenser of 4F. At first I saw the flash but not anymore. I think most of it is poor follow through.
  15. Rocketman89408

    Getting there !

I use the primer pans that dispense 3 grains at a shot of 4 F. Less is more definitely. It's the brain thing.

    Getting there !

Even though I have been shooting caplocks all my life and killed lots of deer. I have never shot a flintlock. The Kibler Woodsrunner was making me flinch, BAD. It has taken about 3 weeks but when I do my part it does it's part. I know I suck but I don't care. At 65 my give a manure days are over...

    Woodsrunner CNC Incised Carving

    That is perfect.

    Woodsrunner CNC Incised Carving

I agree 100%. I loved building the rifle and it shoot's perfect and is very accurate. But less carving would be nice. My friend bought the same rifle with no carving and carving on his would distract from the wood pattern.

    Woodsrunner CNC Incised Carving

I bought the fully carved. I like the engraving but if I were to do over I would skip.
