    1851 Grip Question

Thanks to all who have replied. Think I'm going to take a chance on the $20 blank I found on-line. If it doesn't work I'll throw it in the parts bin and try my hand at a scratch build.

    1851 Grip Question

That's kinda what I was originally thinking. But I don't know which of the more common manufacturers might have used a slightly larger grip that could be reshaped. The one already roughed out blank I found on line looks promising, but just my luck something will be off just enough that it won't...

    1851 Grip Question

Thanks. I'll take a look. That is a really nice looking grip. I may have to go this route, and saw that Taylors sells an oversized (rough) blank that might serve as a starting point. The lazy side of me just hoped to see if I could identify a closer match before I started on yet another project...

    1851 Grip Question

I need grips for an older brass framed 1851 Navy repo I just picked up. Only markings on it (other than Italian proofs) are "EIG Navy" on top of the barrel. Unfortunately, there seems to be some variation in grip sizes among the Italian manufacturers. So, anybody know what the best/closest...

    Wheellock Info

Thanks all for the information so far. After reading the comments and taking a harder look at the larger locks, I'm wondering if their lack of embelishment might be the result of heavy use and/or over cleaning. The front spring (pardon my ignorance on terminology) of at least one of them looks...

Don't know. I haven't tried to do anything with them (don't want to break anything).

    Wheellock Info

I did ponder whether these might be later copies that have been '"aged" a bit to make them appear older than they are. I'm pretty good at spotting repos/fakes, but in this instance, I just don't have the expertise to tell. They do, however, strike me as being rather old. Interestingly, there was...

    Wheellock Info

Flint62Smoothie, thanks much for the help with the pics! Really helps with showing details. And, yeah, to me, the two bigger locks do seem pretty crude compared to most pictures I've found on-line. Adding to that, they also appear very well used (aka "beat"). They could all benefit from a bit...

    Wheellock Info

A little while l back I went to a rather "interesting" estate sale. The items I walked out with included the 3 wheellock mechanisms pictured here. Now I've been shooting/collecting muzzleloaders for 40+ years, but wheellocks, well they just don't show up in my neck of the woods very often. I...
