CVA Prospector

patch question
I'm taking advantage of a learning ooportunity here. I've recently bought a digital micrometer, and found the pillow ticking I've been using is .025" thick, along with the .490 ball. When is a flint bad?

One powder
Kinda new with the flinter. Seems like the most common recipe is 3f for the charge, and 4f for the priming charge. What experiences have you had with using one powder for both?- stacks

Cant stop the rust
Just finished my GPR kit rifle, used the LM rust brown degreaser. I followed the instruction, used 5 coats of the solution, wiped it clean and followed with a saturation of oil. Several days later, the barrel keeps bleeding rust, even through the oil. What to do????- stacks

Finishing the gun barrell
O.K., I'm getting ready to brown finish my barrell. I bought it as a kit "Lyman" .50 flinter. I was going to use LMF,seems easy enough to work with from I'm reading. I guess my question is, do you fix the sights on the barrell first?, will that affix them, or can they still be adjustable...- stacks

1858 Remington Pietta Sights and Caps
I've got the very same gun you have. The original nipples went bad relatively quickly and had to be replaced. The nipples are 6 X .75 MM, and you should be able to find replacements through most of the suppliers. I just got a six pack of the TRESO's and the #11 Remington caps seem to fit snug... -

Zonie, I got through to them, sure enough they were mislabled. The correct size is 6 X .75mm for my Pietta, I'm sure this get resolved quick enough. I can't really go shootin' right now, kinda cold here in Missouri......Thanks for your response...... -

Correct nipple size?, Pietta .44 cal, BP, 1858 New Army. Bought it from cabellas. I recently ordered a replacement batch from Thunder ridge. As soon as I opened the package it was obvious they too big. The invoice indicates they are 6 X .75, however, my tap and dye says they're 5/16 X 24... -

W-skid, "10-4", that's exactly what I was thinking when I decided to start with the replacement of better quality nipples. At first I pulled the grips off the gun and started looking at the mechanics. I must have looked like a starved cow figuring out to get past a cattle guard crossing...
