Thoughts on .40 Cal for squirrels?

I've shot a few with my .40 cal. percussion. good results using round ball and 40 grains fff. have not destroyed any, but have ruined front quarter when the shot was a bit off.

    Flintlock problem

I use 5/8x3/4 flints for my small siler lock and have no problems. You might want to try one of these before making adjustments to your lock.

    Heading more towards primitive

You relly should try to make your own shooting bag. It is not really too hard and you don't need many tools. You can find patterns and instructions by using Google. If you don't have a local leather shop like Tandy, you can find them on the net. Don't worry too much about making it look...

    Ohio Style Rifles

Look at the hawkin squirrel rifle from Don Stith. The half-stock version looks a lot like what you are talking about. Don't know if it comes in a flint version, but you could ask.

    Problems with TVM fowler vent.

When I wanted to buy a southern mountain rifle, I looked at several custom makers and found that for about $3500 or more I could have a very nice period correct firearm. I did not want to spend that much, so I looked at TVM and found that for about $1100 I could have a rifle that was not an...

    Old dog, new trick

Thanks Joe and Semisane, glad to hear you had no damage either and proud to be in such fine company.

    Old dog, new trick

Well, I thought I had been doing this long enough that I had made all the mistakes you could make--you know, no powder, no ball, stuck ram rod, etc. Today I was doing a little informal target practice with my .50 percussion when a shot sounded and felt a little strange. I thought about it a...

getting a "canoe gun" would love to see some pic's.

I recently saw a western that was made in the early 1940's, I can't remember the name of the movie but it was on the Encore Western channel so it will probably be on again in the near future. In the movie, the indian a chief carried a very short barreled flintlock musket, I'm guessing around...

Help with Buying a Traditional Percussion Rifle

I think you can get the Lyman with a fast twist barrel...and left handed. Look at the TOW site.

Help with Buying a Traditional Percussion Rifle

I would really recommend you look at the TVM Leman rifle. It costs a little more than you wanted, but it is a really correct fur trade era rifle. The six or seven months wait for the rifle may deter you and I don't know how it will be for conicals, but it will be a rifle you can have made for...

    TVA southern

Thanks for the information, looks like you have done a lot of research on the subject. I have always liked the style of the southern rifle, but you have now made me think that it would be fun to read more about the rifles and the times and places they were used.

    TVA southern

Thanks Hanshi, I was hoping you would respond as I like the looks of your rifle. Decided to go with browned steel. Now just have to wait several more months.

    TVA southern

I've ordered a southern mountain rifle from TVA. .45 cal., 13/16 x 42" barrel, steel furniture, p++ wood. I live in East Texas and would like to have a rifle representative of what might have been used here during the time between the War of 1812 and the War of Texas Independence (1830's)...

    Crown Work Required?

I have only owned about 6 muzzleloaders, but I have never had to do any crown work. If you are really concerned about this you probably should contact the barrel maker, I am sure they can tell you if any crown work is needed.

Looking for opinions on bear grease and mink oil

I have been using Bumblin Bear Grease for a couple of months and so far I am pleased with it. I don't like to use oil in my barrel during deer season so I clean and dry the barrel and use my patch lube to coat the barrel. So far, I havn't found rust in the barrel when using the BBG. It works...

    Small game rifle

Thanks, I have looked at the hawken squirrel rifle and I like it, but it appears to be available only in percussion. Hanshi, I really like the Chambers Early York even though the smallest caliber available is .40. Have you had any experience in building from a kit? I think it might be fun...

    Small game rifle

I'm thinking of getting a new small game rifle in .32 caliber. It seems that many, or most, of the small game flintlocks I have seen are either Tennessee or Southern Mountain style rifles. While I like these rifles, I would like something different for my next one, so my question is what other...

    50 or 54

I have hunted with both and find little difference in the field. As others have said, ball placement on the target is more important than than the difference between .50 and .54. If I had only one and was going to use it only for hunting I might lean toward the .54. But, my guess is that if...

    Stock Wood Quality

I just ordered a southern mountain rifle from TVM. I ordered it with the standard maple stock as I guess that these rifles would be made with whatever stock material was available to the maker and better quality wood would be used for more fancy rifles. But I have been wondering, what is the...
