    Help With front Sight Height

You guys are going to throw rocks at me and that’s fine and probably advisable. But back in the day I was getting new guns if the sights needed significant adjustment I’d send the barrel back to the maker, along with a sample target and they would bend the barrel accordingly. That’s the way the...

Which is historically correct, precut patches or cut at muzzle?

I’m a hunter and have used loading blocks for sixty years or more. For my first (and hopefully) only shot needed for large four legged animals I use a fairly tight ball/patch combo. But in my loading block I usually have the same ball but a thinner patch. Second shots if needed often must be...

54 caliber, not so odd any more?

I make the muzzle coning tool and calibers in order of popularity are .50, ,54 and .45 (about equal), .58, .40, 32, .36, and .62. I really like the .54 for hunting mule deer. I always felt it a tad light for elk so use a .58 for that job. I’ve also shot a lot of deer with my.50 but since I’m...

    How many years Muzzleloading experience?

1958. Guess that’s 56 years ago! And my first rifle was an Allen & Thurber .45, which in the early 60’s was copied by Bill Mowrey and he sold a huge number of them.

Flint gets stuck on hammer face.

I agree the first place I’d look is the flint too long? If it’s hitting more than 2/3 up frizzen it needs shortening or changing the bevel by turning the flint over. If nothing else works call Jim Chambers. Great guy and one way or another he will put the lock in shape.

    Parrot Vice $45

I bought my versa vice (same vice) about 30 years ago. It came with one swiveling jaw—great for odd pieces. But one thing I really didn’t like was each moving piece rubbed steel on steel. That Is irritating to say nothing of needless wear. So, with my lathe I proceeded to fabricate parts so now...

I have ten Getz barrels, all stamped. Don was a great friend and hunted with me here in Texas. His wife, Gail, was also a great person! Sure miss them!

Has anyone used the new USPS Ground Advantage?

Grond Advantage is nothing more than the old first class, which doesn’t exist anymore.

    Battlefield Pickup Flint

Years ago I found a used English gun flint in an Indian campfire here in the Texas panhandle. Sure enough from the Brandon quarry.

    Can this stock be fixed?

I think you’ve also got some tiny slivers breaking off which will complicate the repair. But it can be done and be almost unnoticeable and as stated above stronger than original. My advice—send it to someone familiar with these types of repairs. No place for amateurs! I also find it hard to...

    1850? Scott and son shotgun

I’m inclined to think the gun is entirely of later Belgium manufacture and as was so common at one time had fraudulent proof stamps on it. Certainly the castle stamps are crude. The patch box is out of place on an English gun but very common on a continental trade gun. Considering the time...

    How old are ya?

81 and still kicking. Shot my first muzzleloader in ‘58 way before any reproductions were available. Prices we paid back then for good originals seem obscene now. But didn’t make much difference cause we didn’t have the money to pay the $50 or less for a good one. My how times have changed...

Breech Plug Pull + Reinstallation Services?

Most breech plug tangs are tapered from top to bottom. A plain Crescent wrench with parallel jaws will usually mar the plug. I ground The bottom jaw to an angle common to most tangs and then soldered thin brass shims to each jaw. So this modified wrench easily turns most plugs without any...
