    Staining a stock repair

Hard to really tell from the pic, but it looks like you have a thick glue line. I don't think you'll get it covered up if that's the case. Maybe it's something else going on. what are your thoughts on the glue line?

    lock building links

The search still didn't show much. I tried using the quotation marks, but only got 8 results, with nothing of note. whiterabbit, that is awesome. I knew I had run across something like that recently. I've got it now. I saw that page on the Manton a few years ago. Definitely got some useful...

    lock building links

Anybody out there have any lock building links, or experience? It's a daunting task, I know, but just looking for pics and discussions on building them. I tried the search function here, but couldn't come up with anything. Someone on this forum did a mule's ear a few years back, but I never...

    Fowler build pics

My personal favorite is the standard block plane. However, I use it more for basic woodworking than I have in gun building. But, I haven't carved out a stock yet. Also, if you can find a decent plane with a not-so-great iron, Lee Valley sells good quality replacement irons. Or, you can buy a...

    tubing for barrels

Bob, I see where you're coming from, and that's how most of these conversations usually end. I've been watching these topics for a few years now (I know others have watched much longer), and I've never seen any actual evidence. Only guesses, extrapolation, and accusation. It might be safe...

    tubing for barrels

I appreciate the logic in that, Jerry, but the reason we know not to grab bare wires is the number of people that have died, and continue to die from that. I still don't see how that addresses the strength or weakness of dom tubing for use in barrels. Problem is, there is no guarantee of...

    tubing for barrels

Yeah, I don't think we'll get answers to the questions you're asking, Bob. It's the exact answers that we are all asking on this topic. All I have ever "seen" is recommendations to not use dom, with some people throwing insults and accusations of stupidity at those that ask the question...

    tubing for barrels

It is my understanding that many, many barrels failed "back in the day". But I wouldn't use that as justification for dom being good enough. I'm sure it's stronger than the old methods of barrel manufacture, but still not convinced that it is as safe as a drilled barrel.

    tubing for barrels

I'm going to emphasize my opinion again, in case everyone didn't catch it. I firmly believe that - in the event that you concede that dom would be acceptable for use as a barrel - you still need to inspect it on a case-by-case basis. I personally don't trust proof testing as a way to...

    tubing for barrels

The area of concern for me would be in the HAZ. There will be a line the length of the tube that is going to have different mechanical properties than the rest of the tube, due to the welding process. I can think of no reasonable way to test that area, because if you get a sample big enough to...

Also, if anyone knows the yield and tensile strength on the materials we're discussing, that would be of note. Impact strength would be worth looking at, too.

    tubing for barrels

Also, what steels are going into production barrels currently, and what is going into Dom tubing?

    tubing for barrels

I would like to see someone do some real testing on the steels in question on this debate. I have never seen it. Part of the issue with tubing is the fear of it rupturing under the pressure rather than deforming. I suppose I should go out and buy a piece and test it. I can do mag particle...

    New England Woods?

Cherry is softer than maple. I haven't made a gunstock out of it, so can't comment on its carve-ability, but I like making other things with it. Real easy to work with, and it smells awesome. I could definitely seeing it fracture easy. I also wondered if that's why we see so few old rifles...

    Annealing weld wire

Like it or not, flux core burns hotter. No way around it, just the nature of the beast. When you do a small weld, your welder will bring the filler material and the parent steel up to welding temp - if it does not, your "weld" will fall out. Once you stop welding, it will immediately begin to...

    Cutting trees for stock blanks

My understanding is that the "soft maple" sold for gunstocks is, in fact, red maple. Red maple is considered soft by most counts. The soft maple that I got is looking really soft. I work with southern yellow poplar some, but what I have is harder than the maple I pulled last weekend. The...

    Cutting trees for stock blanks

Yeah, distance is always a problem for me. My dad's and my grandpa's farms are about 3 hours from me, makes things less convenient for sure. I walked to church yesterday, and saw a handful of huge cherry trees along the street that need to be pulled out - for about 10 seconds, I wasn't hating...

    Cutting trees for stock blanks

I actually took one small piece of the soft maple to plane down some. It had incredible curl in it. I might turn it into some grips for one of my revolvers, but the stock search will probably be on hold until spring or summer. Thanks for the input.

    Cutting trees for stock blanks

Well, after looking at things today, I've decided that I'd be looking at silver maple, so those will probably be passed over entirely. If they are as soft as I've been told, I'm not even going to bother with them. The cherries I'll still go for, and I guess there are some good sugar maples...
