Someone did a really poor crown job on that rifle. Also, I can't tell from the pictures what has marked the inside of it. I would say cut and crown also.

I watched a show a few years back and they said to boil it first to render out the fat since that was the source of the flavor that turned some people off.
A longer barrel and an extra barrel wedge. The Mountain Rifle has a 32" Barrel and the Hawken a 28" barrel. The Mountain rifle is the most sought sfter CVA rifle. They can go for 4-500 bucks in the current market.
Great deal for a CVA Mountain Rifle. I can't really tell by the lock pictures, but is the fly in place? Also, the tip of that sear may have been broken off, a common issue with those locks. But if you got it functioning, good for you!
I think the book is Guns and Gun Making Tools of Southern Appalachia. But it has some pistol examples made up in the Mountains. Think very simple and unadorned almost crude.
What is legal in your state dictates the answer. But a .36 with enough power would probably do the job. But you know, the right tool for the right job!
