I know this has been brought up a bunch of times but I can't find the old threads.

What type of bulk fabric will mic out at .015?

Pillow ticking runs about .018.

I went to Hancock Fabrics yesterday and there was nothing in the store over .010 besides pillow ticking.

I just went through this myself. Try a fabric called "drill". It's all cotton and has a consistency similar to pillow ticking. The various bolts I miked were .013 to .016. Works fer me.

I feel for you Dawg, I went to my local fabric store in Middletown Ohio last weekend, and found it was GONE! Fortunately I've got a decent supply of the ticking I need, but I've got a Bess on the way, and it'll gobble up fabric. I better find another store.

I imagine a fabric store (or fabric department) could order ya up some ticking. If ya get a whole bolt that should hold ya for awhile :winking:

I don't 'spose this is the right place, but I sure wouldn't mind hearin more about that bess...

I ahve some 100% cotton table cloths that I acquired for free. They are probably 3 1/2 feet wide by nine feet long and that mic out at .015.
Are you interested in some of this material for patching?

Thank you for the offer but I just found some drill cloth at joann fabrics and it mics at .016.
It's washing right now so I'll see how it measures with the sizing removed.

You can usually get it at Walmart for about $ 3.77 a yard in blue striped, red striped or plain off/white. Theirs usually mics .013 to .016, and even tho they have the sane SKU # on them, they will mike dif from bolt to bolt. I got a 15 yard bolt there the last time that was .016 . Several tries before that they were all .013 .. The last I got at a fabric store was a solit .020 thick.

I just bought some ticking at Walmart a couple days ago. It mic'ed out at .017-.018

Should ticking be washed before using it? Up until now, I've always used store bought patches.

What Birddog6 said. Most of the ticking from Walmart, that I have gotten, runs closer to .016" than .018", but it does vary from batch to batch. Pillow ticking compresses fairly easily and I'm not sure you will see much difference between another cotton fabic that is .015" and pillow ticking that is .016" to .018".

Always wash the sizing out of the fabric before you use it. It will soften a lot and hold the lube batter.

The patching your talking about, are you compressing it with a "C" mic?. You need to compress it to see what thickness it is under compression. When your loading using a patch you are compressing the fibers very tight. You need to use the mic in the same manner when checking thickness before you buy it. The material even though it may be the same type will not always compress to the same thickness. I have .o18 material when compressed turns into .011. It's important that you use the tightest patch you can for your rifle to perform at it's best. But when hunting you want a patch that will allow you to load when its cold outside. Thats when the lube comes into play...Good luck..ssettle
