I am curious. I have a Traditions 1858 New Army .44 cal pistol. It uses #10 caps. Can I change the nipples to use #11 caps. I would appreciate pros and cons for the change....Robin

Yes, I buy my nipples from Cain's Outdoors & they make them to take the #11 caps. As far as I can see there are no 'cons' to this change. I find the aftermarket nipples tend to be better quality than most of the factory-issued ones. Also, if you shoot rifles, you can just buy the one size of cap for both rifle & revolver.

I'm kinda new to this sport and both my revolvers have #11 nipples and I use # 10 caps. I get a real tight fit, caps stay put and I have yet to experience a FTF. But as I said, I'm new to the sport and might just be a lucky SOB

You can put #11 nipples on it.
I put #11's on my 1851 because finding #10 caps is a pain. Now I use the same caps for everything. Track Of The Wolf carries #11 nipples for revolvers.

I use 11s for my cap and ball revolvers i just give them a good squeeze to make them fit good.
I recently bought a Tap O Cap and started making my own caps they fit #10 and #11 nipples both well.

Now you have me curious. What is a tap-0-cap? I assume that they are home made caps, right? How do you make them and how do they compare to store bought? I once read an article abour home made caps, using aluminum from beverage cans, and cap pistol caps, but I thought the idea died out due to a lack of intrest....Robin

Yes you make caps out of soda cans. It is a die you tap it with a mallet and it forms a cap then you put three paper caps in it. I just got yesterday i wiped a hundred caps in no time. I have not shot any yet. I punch my own wads, and patches. I cast my own bullets and balls thought i would give caps a try.

Good luck with that.

I have heard from many who tried these cap making things who were, should we say, very disappointed with the results.

The main problem seemed to be getting the cap pistol caps cut down to size to fit, and to fire reliably.

IMO, if they were all their cracked up to be everybody would be using them.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Cutting the caps is easy it comes with a hole punch to do that. I found a good way to put the caps in good not off to the side. The only thing that would not make them work good is if the caps them self are not hot enough.

I been using Big Bang toy plastic caps for a while now. They have been working good. I am using the same brand paper caps in my Tap O Cap Caps. Hopefully they work good.

These things have been around for years and most of the big muzzleloading supply houses have carried them at one time or another. I can't recall ever hearing a good word about them--they seem to be an answer to a question no one has ever asked.
