10 Ga. Artillery Drops Flyin' Chickens!

Well the old Pedersoli 10 ga. SxS did another marvelous showing last Friday! As 1 of 4 in a hunting party, I was able to harvest 5 pheasants cleanly with but a single blast & I helped on two others that were drifting wounded, for a total of 7 ringnecks out of a 20-bird package, so I held-up my end of the action!

Used my custom loading of 72 grains of FFFg Goex, a 1/8" OP card, a cushioned shot wad, 1 3/4 oz. #6 shot & a OS card. Superior pattern density even from a cylinder bore barrel did the trick! Farthest harvest was a 40 yard shot that broke a hen cleanly. Dem "Flyin' Chickens" didn't stand a chance!

That's quite a stout load there. My 12 ga. isn't really effective past 30 yards.

Thanks for the kind words! Until I increased the quantity of shot pellets, I felt the same way as you. Experimenting with a patterning board first & then some coffee cans to test penetration (yeah I know it's NOT scientific, but it does the job) led me to develop my current loading.

And don't worry about the gun being able to handle it....stamped right on the underside of the barrels it says the gun is rated for 109 grains of powder with 1 1/2 oz. of shot! In my head I erred on the side of caution and figured they might have meant Fg (single-F), so I went about figuring what the equivalent charge volume would be for FFg & FFFg by starting with the finer grained powder and working on the theory that FFFg is approx. 10% more "lively" than FFg, and then compounding this figure for single-Fg.

Here's the math:

72 grains x 10% = 7.2 + 72 = 79.2 of FFg equivalent.

79.2 grains x 10% = 7.92 + 79.2 = 86.94 of Fg equivalent.

So I have more than enough room to spare even though I'm using an extra 1/4 oz. more shot than the 109 grain single-Fg stamping from the manufacturer says I can. Pattern density knocks 'em down & #6's offer the best compromise because they still retain more energy than 7 1/2's at decent yardage and yet won't tear-up the meat closer-up.

Tonight is re-heated left-over meatloaf, but tomorrow I get Pheasant Chili! YUM!

Games lands 43 was bumping this weekend. Mind you I have no flintlock yet.... But the birds were flying. That is my favorite spot to hunt.
