Anyone know what the outside diameter is on a 10 ga. plastic shot wad?
Just wondering if they'd fit a .751 bored Bess for steel shot?
Bismuth went up! :curse:

Riarcher,
Nominal diameter of the 10 gauge is 0.775 inches. Do you do that much non-toxic shooting that you are willing to switch to steel? Remember steel requires higher velocities to be effective.

I will still pay a little extra to get the performance of the bismuth. Last year I bought a 10 pack of hevi-shot. Took them apart, and still have a few left for this year.

I still have a good supply of #2's and #5's bismuth from last year. I plan to do some sandhill crane hunting in fall and will buy a 10 pack of hevi-shot BB's and separate the components.

Sincerely,
Smokepole

Here are the bore sizes...

You could probably use a .12 ga steel shotcup with a wrap of paper around it to make it fit the Bess bore. As long as you put an overpowder wad under it to seal the bore, it should work ok. :m2c:

The cost of Bismuth for me seems,,,, excessive. It's expensive to begin with and nobody carries it so with shipping we're looking at $100 +/-. and I'm almost out of both #2 and BB.
I'm all set for my SxS for this year (maybe) but I'll need to work-up on the Bess.
I do a lot of geese and ducks here and have days of a doz. or more shots in one outing. (by the 10 pack is overboard for me). Sure would be nice if it was a 4 lb. bottle though.

Thanks, I wonder if the wads are actually out to size or if they are just a bit smaller for them new fangled plastic hulls?

Rebel-
.020 is a lot of paper. I wonder if they'd open? I've wrapped heavy before and ended up with a "slug's" whole in my paterning sheet. Have you tried it?

Think I'll " :hmm: " on this a bit more.

I haven't tried it yet, but my Bess is do to arrive tomorrow. I don't think you would have to have a real tight fit in the bore with the plastic wad, as long as you use an overpowder wad under it to seal the bore good. I use an overpowder wad under the .12 ga steel shotcups in my double barrel .12 ga. even. Maybe use a wrap of heavy brown paper bag and cut some slits in it to help it open?

Hmmm, that is a possibility. I'll try some tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks. :blue:

I think maybe I've given you the wrong idea. I bought the 7 lb. jugs of the #2's and #5's 2 years ago. Where I hunt in Ohio my number of shots available are a bit lower.

I used the hevi-shot and components for the sandhill cranes. They required a little more to bring them down.

I've been hunting with some people in Katy Texas from the Blackpowder Waterfowlers. As you can tell, ONLY blackpowder shooting allowed.
