Starting at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 5, the North-South Skirmish Association ( http://www.n-ssa.org ) will be holding its 118th Nationals at the home range, Fort Shenandoah, near Winchester, Va.

Some 3,000 members will gather for five days of competition, both as individuals and in teams, with Civil-War-era revolvers, carbines, breechloaders, smoothbores and muskets -- not to mention mortars and field artillery!

You can get a taste of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtpI0zcaEjA
but there's NOTHING like being there!

If Civil War weaponry winds your watch, get to Winchester this week. Maps, programs, etc., available through links at the above link. Hope to see you there!

Not wanting to sound like a smart-alec, but if the NSSA was founded in 1950 how is this the 118th Nationals? Are they held multiple times a year?
By the way, I enjoyed the video. I don't think NSSA operates on the west coast, is there a similar body over this way (Washington)? I seem to recall seeing a display at a gun show a few years back.

You guessed it: There are two Nationals each year, one each in late May and early October. Odd number in spring, even in fall.

This past weekend the 110th OVI of the Midwest Region repeated as national musket champs. I don't have their official times yet, but it will have been phenomenal for 32 clay birds on a cardboard backer, 16 hanging 4-inch tiles, 16 hanging clay birds, 16 hanging pots (all at 50 yards) and 10 six-inch tiles at 100 yards. And the Northern Virginia weather was perfect -- mid-60s days, mid-40s overnights, and nary a drop of "Shenandoah sunshine"!
