This is what has worked for me in an original open choked 12 ga. sxs. I load with 2 3/4 drams of ff 777, over powder wad (from Mike at Friendship), half a regular lubed cushion wad, 1 1/8th ounces of shot and the think over shot wad. This is a square load using an ounce and one eighth dipper. The patterns are good for me with this.

My nephews is the one that says Devin on it. He has 12 g #8
I pretty much matched his pattern with 3 dams powder amd #5 shot. 3 over shot cards over powder and one over shot

Hopefully this helps anybody that was just as confused as me

This advice is great. Just 2-3 overshot cards between powder and shot and 1 above shot usually gets you a decent pattern.
I tend not to use a cushion was unless I am using the skychief load (look in smoothbore forum).
With really heavy loads I'll use an over powder card then shot then overshot card. That's mostly with 1.5- 2 ounce bismuth loads. Seems to pattern better in my gun.

A couple of my patterns. The Skychief load used for turkey. At 20 yards, 1Oz #6, 70gr FFG(left) ….And, the load without over shot felt wad, only a thin card wad….Used for upland bird hunting. 8x10” paper. No choke, 20ga Fowler.

Great examples Art! Your results are pretty much the same as mine with those components. I'm just not smart enough to take pictures.

One thing I remember is a friend that when I shot his BP shotgun, I would be in one spot and my boots in another. 😂

If this video works for the upload heres a vid of my nephew shooting the pedersoli

Many fellows I know use a modern shot cup with BP.

I used 'em for a long time in my cyl/imp cyl Navy Arms 12. They didn't give me any appreciable improvement on my patterns. They did make loading it simpler, but at the same time, I was getting some plastic buildup over time. I don't use them any more. I use home made cardboard wads these days.

Is there some kind of punch/die so I can cut my own over powder and over shot cards?
