Is this a good price for a 50 cal. t/c hawkens. Guy said it has been only fired twice and is in perfect condition. Been a wall hanger for several years. Going to look at it today. Also if I get it and then would like to get a 58 cal or 54 cal barrel for it is hard to exchange the barrels out.
I have shot my friends 58 cal civil war enfield and was fun but gun was heavy. Have a 1858 rem, that I enjoy shooting but kinda would like to have a rifle. Any advantages to a hawkin compared to the civil war types.

If the rifle you will be looking at is a Thompson Center Hawken, and is not abused, then $150.00 is a very good price. As for putting a larger caliber barrel into the stock, it might not fit too well. You would have to check the size of the barrel. Green Mountain makes drop in barrels, look them up. A drop in barrel might be more than the cost of the rifle. If the barrel is in good shape, I'd shoot it as it is, but that would depend on what you intend to shoot with it.
I have a .50 cal TC Hawken that I have been shooting for over thirty years. It is a fine rifle and serves me well.

What caliber you get will depend on how big the barrel in the rifle is. If it is 15/16" across the flats you should be able to find a .54 rather easily. A .58 would be rather thin for the barrel. If the barrel is a 1" then a .58 would work fine.

Changing out the barrel should require nothing more than removing the wedge and pulling the old barrel out and dropping in the new.

If its clean buy all you can at that price.

Note:
.58cal won't fit.

T/C's .45/.50cal Hawkens use 15/16" barrels and regular size Hawken stocks with 15/16" size barrel beds.

T/C's .54/.58cal barrels are 1" and use the larger size Hawken stocks with 1" barrel beds.

As someone mentioned, GM did make a 15/16" x .54cal drop-in barrel but I don't know if they still do...could check their website

never had a percussion T/C, but their flint version is a solid performer. You'll find the balance a bit different when compared to a Civil War musket, but that's dependant on the design of the rifle, and not so much the manufacturer or the calibre.

(just one guy's opinion.)

if you don't see demonic green smoke comming out of the barrel when you pick it up, it's a very good price, and you should whip out your hard earned, over taxed, God entrusted dollars right away. (Well, you should look down the bore, take the lock out and look it over for obvious problems, that sort of thing.) i don't know if T/C will replace barrels for rust/pitting/being- too- dumb- to- clean- it- after- firing sorts of problems, but everything else would be covered under their warranty which is really pretty straightforeward: if it's not right we'll fix it. So if you're hoping to put in a .54 or .58, you can't go wrong.

just my 2 cents

make good smoke!

Sounds like a good price to me. Let us know how it turned out, pic`s..................

Well I got it. The gun looks brand new. Guy gave me all the supplies for it and manuals. I think i may be a kit gun since serial number starts with k310 and so on.Big thing of Pyrodex RS an FFg equivalent but think I will use Goex Black Powder FFFg.

You got a good deal. :)

The real black powder will work best but the Pyrodex RS will also work as a direct 1:1 replacement.
The biggest negitive about the Pyrodex is it will sometimes have a slight hesitation before it ignites after the cap fires.

not in my area. i picked up 4 t/c hawken kits, for $100. each . i rarely go to auctions or gun shows where t/c hawkens go over $200.
