I had an interesting conversation with a customer in So. Carolina today. He had a question that I couldn't answer, thought I'd throw it out here and see if anyone else knows. He wants to build a 1745-50 era trade gun, British Pattern (a Carolina gun) and wonders of the barrel should be stepped at the transition between oct. and round. We know that earlier guns had this feature but when did this end, generally? Originals are rare, hard to find close-up pictures and descriptions with details of the barrels. Any ideas?

If you are actually talking about the so-called "Type G" trade gun that seems to have been traded in the southern colonies, Gdts makes the 46" barrel that has no steps but is a standard octagon-to-round type. I'm not sure what else was traded then, perhaps someone has a better knowledge than moi! :winking:
