I have been looking for an 1849 .31 that has a decent length barrel. The only one I am finding is the Palmetto from Dixie with the 5.5 inch barrel. The Uberti is four inch tops. Is the extra inch and a half of barrel worth trading Uberti Quality for Palmetto quality?

Nope...You will read may opinions on this forum concerning Plamettos lack of quality. I would stick with Uberti . You do get what you pay for.

Absolutely!!! There is a rumor that Palmetto's guns are assembled by drunken chimpanzees in a closet with no lights and that the only tool they are allowed to use is a sledge hammer. Personally I doubt that--I'll bet they let them use chain saws and cutting torches too....

The price is not much cheaper than the Uberti, so price has nothing to do with anything. The 4 inch barreled guns don't produce much usable power for wacking bushy tails or a rabbit that hopped off and stopped at 20 yards to look back. The added inch and a half should be good for quite a bit more velocity and power over the shorter 4 inch barrel. That doesn't help anything if the gun is so sloppy you can't hit anything with it.
A friend gave me a CVA kit gun that was never assembled all the way. I am considering sleeving it to a caliber that will allow me to use the same 000 buckshot I use in the 36 rifle. That project will be a while getting completed.
Anyway, you all have a nice day!

do you mind me asking...
just how much more velocity/foot pounds energy
will an extra one & one half inches of barrel lenght add???

About 150fps is what I would expect in velocity gains. The reports of the ball penetrating one side of a can with the short barrel guns pretty much says it all. I have pellet pistols that produce enough power with a 36 ball to blow thru heavy cans easily. A 31 should make a good carry squirrel pistol, but it has to produce a usable hunting result.

My 1849 Uberti will penetrate both sides of a steel 3lb coffee can at 25 yards. I use enough 3f and a wonder wad so the ball is clearing the barrel around a sixteenth of an inch..It has a 4 inch barrel..........Bob

I currently own two 1849 Uberti's and find they have ample power if loaded with 3f instead of 2f.
They will easily pentrate and splinter a 2x4.

If you are looking for more power than that than I suggest you look at a different pistol, the 1862 Police is an excellent small frame 36 which you might be happy with.

Oh yes..........I've shot them all for 30 years except a 31 so I had to get a 31 this past year.......I also shot the 31 into a wet Numrich arms catalog.............Seems it went 3/4s of the way thru it. The Single "O" buck 320 balls were oblong with a good flat side on them with the rifling graved. I do have the hots for a 32 SW cylinder though..................Bob
