I was in a gun shop today that has interesting original blackpowder stuff. He had an original 1851 Colt 36 Caliber. Asking price was $3500. A little steep for me. What really got my attention was a Remington Pocket in 36 Caliber. This was an original. It had the Remington name stamped on the barrel. I didn't know Remington made a pocket in 36. I know about the 31. Does anyone know anything about this revolver? I may go back and take a picture of it.

I believe the Remington you saw was a "New Model Police Revolver".
They were designed to compete with the Colt Model 1862 Police revolvers and were smaller framed than the Remington New Model Navy.

This was a .36 caliber, five shot gun that was available with a 3 1/2, 4 1/2, 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 inch barrel.
There were approx 18,000 of them made from 1863 to 1873 and were either blued or nickel plated. A few had elaborate engraving on them.

Well, I'm confused now. I have a replica 1858 New Model Police in 36 Caliber. At least that's what Pietta says it is. It is a six shot with 6 1/2 inch barrel but it has the same size frame as my 44. The frame on the one I saw today was more like the 31 Pocket. I am going to go back up and get a picture.

It would not be terribly unusual for Pietta, or any other replica maker for that matter, to take a little liberty with the historical facts if they felt it might sell better. For instance, consider the way the word 'Hawken' is used. Or perhaps the brass framed 1851 'Colt' Navy revolvers one can find everywhere.

I think we could understand mykeal better if he took his tongue out of his cheek. :rotf:

Stars&Bars: If your .36 New model is a 6 shot gun and it's frame is about the size of the .44 New Model Army, you have the Italian version of a Remington New Model Navy. I have one too. :)
(As mykeal indicated, these folks selling C&B pistols take a lot of liberty with the guns names.)

Although it is a very nice gun,the reason I said the Italian version is because they simply changed the cylinder and barrel from .44 cal to .36 cal and chose to call it a New Model Navy or in your case, a New Model Police.
The real New Model Navy had a smaller frame than the New Model Army, and the New Model Police was so much smaller that they reduced the cylinder size to a 5 chamber design (like the 1862 Colt Police).

I wish one of the Italian companys would actually make a full size Remington New Model Police (complete with a 5 chamber cylinder).
That would be a sweet little thing to carry.

YES!!!

'Full size' meaning original size, I presume.

Your so right about this one, haveing seen and shot both orgs a good copy of the "pocket" would be a great seller. When I first cked on them I was wondering how the heck such a small gun could weigh only 2 ozs less than the fullsize in all the catlogs! (oh it was the 2" or so shorter barrel) the weight was a dad give way. Fred :hatsoff: I hope to run some pics by this week end f guns that was made that I would like to see made now like the "Bowie knife Patterson" or the 53cal 10 shot Patterson, or 40 cal Navy, or some of the 200 different 1948/49 mods.
