Hey guys,

I own an older Uberti '58 Remington.

The problem is the cylinder locks up (I have to actually force it to turn) after shooting a few rounds. However, it functions perfectly at home.

I plan on ordering some new parts from VIT. What parts should be ordered to smooth out these mechanical issues?

Any help appreciated.

Pull the cylinder off, clean the cylinder pin up good and apply a coat of lube to it. Then try it. All Remingtons start getting tight after a cylinder or 2 are fired. Just part of owning one.

Rebel is spot-on here. The Remington has a small, smooth cylinder pin while the Colt's is much larger with cut rings to hold lubricant to keep things rollin'! There's no other choice but to wipe down the pin kind of often and smearing some grease on.

As was already mentioned it is normal with most C&B Revs. If you wipe and lube the cyl pin/arbor each time you reload it it should not bind up. As they break in they do wear some and loosen.
But what works for me are the lube pills I make and place between the powder and ball. Bolwax or bees wax, Parafin, and Olive oil. They lube and keep the fouling soft in the barrel and between the cylinder and forcing cone, including the Cyl pin/arbor. I shoot all day using these. 80 to a 100 shots per or till I get tired.
Will post the recipe/instructions again, or email um to you if you wanna try them. I'm not fond of wonder wads ect. So this system works great for me.

You got a good idea there with the 'pills'. I do use a felt wad, 1/16, dense composition, self made. When I load my '58 Buffler I charge with powder, place a wad in and a dollop of GO-JO atop with a squeeze bottle that mustard/ketchup is put in. Availabe at K-Mart, Then the slug- I use a Lee mould to make my own- and press the load, then I smear Natural Lube lightly atop the slug smearing it into the space between the cylinder and slug, doesn't take much. I shoot for awhile before I have to pull the pin and clean with GO-JO.
But I lube the pin real good when I'm putting the pistol together after good cleaning.
I tryed Wonder Wads and my pistol was tighter grouping but there's not enough lube on them to make much difference.

Texas77,

here's an alternative for you,...as opposed to wet lube like go jo, oil, wonder lube etc you may want to try a dry lube. Blue Armadillo makes a product like a wax that goes on as a paste and then you wipe it off. once it's on, like your car wax, it repels dirt and debris. it's great for moving parts(like on semi auto pistols). the difference is that wet lube has a tendency to 'catch' dirt or spent powder. on a normal firearm its not a big deal but the bp guns are naturally dirty and for the ones with overly tight tolerances, like yours may have, it causes a problem.

I think this might solve your problem(or at least help).

Another simple thing you can do is spin the cylinder the opposite direction when it starts to get tight/bind. It will free the debris enough for a few more rounds.

if you want to stay the path of wet lube, shoot some ballistol when things get tight. it's a sure way to keep shooting.

Your Uberti may be like mine which is a copy of the original Remington Beals 1858 patent pistol.
This pistol was modified into the New Army configuration prior to the Army accepting it for use.

One of the problems was the frame was very close to the front of the cylinder which led to rapid fouling problems which prevented the rotation of the cylinder.

Most of the current reproductions available are of the New Army which has the frame moved away from the front of the cylinder exposing several barrel threads.

For a little more about this, a picture of the Beals and New Army frame and a post dealing with problems similar to what your having, follow this link:

REMINGTON FOULING

If you have a reproduction of the original Beals style replacing parts will not fix the lock up problem. Try the ideas the other folks posted.

Damn I'm Broke Lube Pills

What I did was start out with:
Parafin comes in a brick divided to to 4 like a stick a butter, I used a stick.
Then 1/4 of a Toilet Seal Ring(Beeswax)substitute with beeswax or use just the parafin.
Then 8-10 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
The Olive oil is the Lube the Waxes just carry it and keep the pill as you want it.
And that made alot about 600 pills...abpout 1/8" thick for the most part, a good level stiff heated pizza/flat walled baking pan is the best thing to pour your mix into...so mix cools evenly .

And worked good for me...you need to try your best guess and add/subract as you like them for your use.

Lube Pills Cutter/Tube
a little piece of 3/8's brass tube soldered into a
longer piece of brass tube that is the next size bigger than the 3/8's tube. The end
that actually cuts into the lube was cut with a little hardware store pipe cutter and
little smaller ring"(the cutter makes it) around the end left as is and not filed off.
That way the pills are actually cut a little smaller than the inside of the first
short section of pipe and the pills don't stick. Of course the pills don't stick in the
upper longer piece of tube since it is the next size bigger than the first short
section soldered in that is 3/8's.That is why the pills just come out of the tube
when they are cut and don't stick in the tube and have to be pushed out with a
dowell.

if you put a drop of black-solv from dixie on the cyl pin there will be no flouing ,have shot mine all day and never had this problem :haha:

this is a remington my wife picked up at a yard sale ,last week-end for $30.00 looks odd .

Nice Rem and a good deal. What make is it?

But what about the barrel fouling? The lube pills let me keep shootin' tight groups with 50 - 100 rounds thru it. Plus it keeps the fouling between the forcing cone and the cylinder face/chambers soft, basically lubed. If ya follow me. A friend told me about making lube pills and I just stumbled onto this recipe one day cause I was broke and wanted to make some...ergo the name "Damn I'm Broke Lube Pills" ... HeeHee!
True story :hatsoff:

the bbl will still foul i only ment the cly will turn freeley and not get gummed up :rotf: its a pietta and yes my wife does have one single sister :youcrazy: i use the felt wads i make mine out of scrap wool blanket dipped in bore butter and paraffine mix ,i cut them out with a 45lc case sharpened on the mouth put an old tap in the primer pocket and chuck it into my drill press you can cut a couple hundred before the case gets dull or deformed.
