They can be converted only problem is the parts and gunsmith stuff would cost more than buying the gun outright. Haven’t seen a kit as of yet for a conversion. Barrel change, head spacing, milling a space for extractor, block change to firing pin, hammer change to cartridge type etc are involved.

Okay thanks for the info. I’m wanting one but I don’t want to convert it, just making sure it can’t be readily converted or anything like that. I can’t wait to get one!

The groove diameter is probably around .535 or more, with a .520 bore. These will require a bullet with at least a thousands or two more than groove diameter to shoot well.
Ordered a set of your bullet molds last week btw...looking forward to getting started with the Blackpowder...

They take either a .510" or .515" bullet. Originals were .515" but reproductions are likely .510" bore.
Neat guns. I have an original that was converted to 50-70 after the Civil War. Sadly here in PA we can use them in regular rifle season but not in our early ML season (doe only…….
The .50 caliber takes a .515 but not the .54
I bought a Pedersoli 1859 Sharps cavalry carbine back around 2010 or so. I also bought the single cavity Pedersoli mold for that carbine. The slug it produced was okay but a lot of internet chatter talked about Moose Moulds and I ended up buying a double cavity Sharps “Christmas Tree” ringtail mould from them. That slug measures .544” and shoots great out of the Pedersoli

I bought the Pedersoli Sharps because at the time I rode with a living history cavalry unit that recreated a Volunteer Cavalry Unit that served where I live in Northern California. That original unit was issued 1856 “Slant Breech” Sharps Carbines but there are no reproduction carbines of that model and the 1859 was as close as we could get. Years of carrying that carbine on a sweaty horse and camping in the rain and/or snow in the back country have taken it’s toll n the finish but it still shoots great. Once in the back country we were taking target practice at a downed log. I decided to recover one of my slugs. From a distance of about 50 yards, my slug went 11” into a still green Yellow Pine log. Not only did it travel nearly a foot into green wood but the pure lead slug showed absolutely no deformation or damage (other than the rifling marks)
