look around your local pawn shops
they are a cheep gun so there are plenty that have been bought
Many black powder guns are bought by someone who thinks they may want to shoot them. Or as a gift by someone who thinks the recipient would like the gun. Then the amount of work these pistols require chases them off. The gun sits around for a few years unfired other than a few times when it was first bought. Then the gun gets sold. In this group of guns there are the ones that wern't cleaned right before they were put away. Easy to spot them. Then there are the guns that look good but something is wrong with them. Look and feel it over real close to weed them out. Then there is the gun that was cleaned properly before it was abandoned, or it never was fired in the first place and it just sat on a display on in a sock drawer. This is the gun you are looking for. You may be plesently surprised at how many black powder pistols in local shops that are in this group.

It is nearly impossiable to beat Dixie Gun Works selection and prices. By the way their prices are usually fair! You can learn a good deal from the reviews that they post. It was not your question but a lot of things are built to diffrent spec's for most on the big box stores! Just saying!.

I'm really warming up to The Possible Shop. Bought a Uberti 1861 Navy and loading materials from them, good prices, excellent service, wait time 4 days from order.

I'm going to try to buy allmy BP revolver needs from them. Just got a warm fuzzy from them and I've learned to trust my gut.

Well, Cabela's did carry an 1861 Navy but I don't see it any more. Dixie Gun Work is excellent but I do still order from Cabela's when they are on sale. Living in TN, anything I order from DGW will include sales tax and that's almost 10%. So I definitely think it's a good idea to shop around.

I used to feel the same way about Uberti over Pietta. My Ubertis were always much nicer guns than my Piettas that are several years old. However, after hearing many good things about the newer Piettas, I decided to give them another chance and ordered an 1851 Navy London model. Fit & finish is easily on par with any of my Uberti guns and the action is smooth. I got two new percussion pistols at Christmas, a Uberti 1849 Pocket from DGW and a Pietta 1851 Navy from Cabela's. The Pietta is the nicer of the two with a smoother action. DGW shows the Uberti out of stock but the Pietta in stock. I would order the Pietta without hesitation.
