:rotf: mainly because until I came here I was totally happy with my 1 rifle, powder horn & bag. Now I want to make/own all the stuff I see here. Now on to my question I want to do a rum horn and another powder horn and add some scrimshae to it I have found some great links and info but on another site saw a hoen that the craftsman used BP(yes I mean Black Powder) instead of ink. I was wondering if any of you had tried this and how does it stand up to everyday use. Thanks for your responses in advance.

Some kinda talk for a rev!! :nono: :rotf:

I never said I was a good one or as 1 of my favorite qoutes from the last count of monte cristo And I para phrase it "I'm a minister not a saint"

Rev,
Yes the BP will work for the scrim, personally I would suggest making a "smudge" out of it with either a lil' spit or linseed oil (which is what I use)
just dump some out on a rag and mix inthe LO or whatever then use your thumb to grind it up a bit, proceed to wipe it onto the horn, then wipe off and Tah-dah! :hatsoff:

I tend to think the black powder in the scrim grooves would wear out or wash out rather quickly. It might leave some black behind, but after all my (your) hard work doing the scrimshaw I would like it to show for a long time. I have used boiled linseed oil with lampblack (soot). it is much easier to buy some black model paint rub it in the scratches with a Q tip then when dry lightly scrape off the excess and polish. Good luck

the linseed oil helps to seal in whatever your using, which includes dirt, BP, india ink, and anything in between.
