First time poster here - been looking to get into blackpower for a while now.

I've been shooting modern revolvers and semi-autos for many years.

I really want to get a traditional looking Percussion cap pistol - and I'd love to make it from a kit.

I've found kits at Dixiegun.com for two that I've narrowed down.

1. Traditions Kentucky Pistol Kit (.50) $147
2. Lyman Great Plains Pistol Kit (.50) $185

Question ONE: Are these decent enough starter kits, and/or is one better than the other?

Question TWO: Are the prices and customer service at Dixiegun.com competitive and competent?

Thanks!

 I just purchased the Traditions Kentucky pistol in .50 perc. and without a doubt you get a good looking gun with all the works functioning quite well. Trigger pull is not as excessive as the Pedersoli Kentucky's, mine pulls 3.4 lbs. average on the Lyman trigger gauge.I personally don't think you can go wrong with either, I personally don't like the "Hawken" style of the Lyman.

Hi Blankman, welcome to the fourm.
I own both pistols and like them both.
The lyman is slightly nicer, but both are good shooters.
Dixiegunworks is a very good company to deal with.
They do have slightly higher prices on some things than other places.
Either kit is a great choice.

Have a Traditions Pioneer in .45. a light good looking pistol. Don't have shoot it yet.

All good info above! Remember when it's time to feed the thing, to use .490 balls and depending on the actual bore dia., a .020 or .018 patch.

A friend of mine uses 30-40 grains of 3Fg in his depending upon the type of target and the distance. More on this later, as you have to build the thing first!!

Welcome to the Dark Side  . Enjoy yourself, and remember that the forum also has threads on building guns too  .

blankman: Welcome to the Forum. :)

If you go with the .50 cal, I agree with the .490 diameter ball, but you might also want to get some .010-.012 thick patches.
Most of us on the Forum do use the thick patches with our rifles, but pistols are not easy to load with them and often the thinner patches work just as well.

If you get one of the kits, be sure to use our Gun Builders Bench forum if you have any questions or problems. Some of the best builders in the United States are regular posters and we all will be more than happy to help you.

In my opinion, the Lyman parts are probably a little better quality, but either gun kit will turn into a fun gun to build and to shoot.

The GPP is a good pistol... you may also want to look at the Traditions Trapper kits. I bit different, you get a double trigger, a bit longer barrel, and they are very accurate shooters.

I'd go for the Lyman myself - based on all of the threads that I've read about this.

Never seen a bad thread or reply about the GPP.
