Squirrel seasons soon. Whats your load for them .."tree Rats" ? Shot and powder loads. I'm shooting a 20 Guage SXS smooth bore. Thanks ..Jeff

Is it choked?

I use 70 grains of 3Fg, and an equal volume of #6 shot. I weighed it and it came out at right about 3/4 - 7/8 of an ounce (give or take a pellet or three), and it's a 2½ dram powder load, so it's equivalent to an "upland" game load in a 20 gauge.

IF you aren't shooting a choked gun, then mixing the shot with the same volume of Jiffy brand, corn muffin mix, and loading this into a paper cartridge that will just barely fit inside the bore, and gently ramming the whole package to seat it on the powder, seems to work quite well.

My general purpose load for squirrels / crows, etc...in my equipment is:

80grns Goex 2F / 1/4” Duro-Felt OP wads / 110grns #5s / Circle Fly OS card

You've gotten good advice. I use the old, unscientific soup can test to know the range limit of whatever load I am using. If the 5's or 6's will penetrate a soup can, vegetable can etc at a given range it will kill squirrels.

I shoot a 20 ga. smoothbore with a single 46" cylinder barrel . I've used #6 shot with good success, but for our big fox squirrels I prefer #5 for it's greater weight. An ounce of #6 has 225 pellets, one of #5 has 170, so I increase my load of #5 to 1 1/8 oz., which gives me about 200 pellets. My patterns are pretty good with that. I shoot 70 gr. of FFg Goex for squirrels.

For the sake of simplicity I use only one measure for most of my shooting with my smoothbore. For my squirreel load I've put a mark inside for 70 gr. FFg, powder, and a full measure gives me 1 1/8 oz. #5.

Not strictly 20g but my .58 smooth'ns get 1oz of shot on top of a few OS cards or newpaper. The powder measure is set around 7/8oz.
I don't use it on squirrel much past 20yds!

I happened to have a powder flask that had a 55 grain spout. I tried it on squirrels and I'm surprised how well I have done with 55 grains of 3f and an ounce of 7 1/2 shot.

Thanks Guys! I love Squirrel hunting. second to deer! I got a Pedersoli 20 guage SXS late fall last year. I took 3 coyotes with it. can't wait to pop a few tree rats Sept 1st in Ohio
