Fall turkey season opened last Monday, but I did not have a chance to get out until Friday morning. I got out to my blind early, about 6:30 a.m. while it was still dark. Woods were very quiet and still. Was really nice being there and listening to the woods wake up. Sunrise is not until close to 7:30 when it actually starts to peek up over the horizon so I just sat quiet and listened to the critters for a while. Shortly after sunrise I heard a turkey yelping. It sounded kinda lonely after the long dark night so I answered it with my homemade turkeywing call. Suddenly I had 3 others answering, 2 of them were fairly close! Well the heart started pumping cuz I thought this was gonna be a lot of fun. Well, I yelped a few more times on my wingbone and again got imeadiate answers from 2 of them. I heard one fly down and gobble, he was really close. I yelped again and he thundered out a gobble, he was getting closer. I could hear him coming, he had to be less than 50 yards away over a small ridge, I got my double flintlock ready.......... then less then 200 yards away a couple of dogs started barking...... never heard those turkeys again :cursing: . I waited a while and decided they were gone, so I popped a nice fat fox squirrel that was sitting in front of me eating a nut.

Went back out Saturday morning same time, same place. Again just after sunrise I yelped with my wingbone call and got an answer behind me. I yelped again and it answered again a little closer. I opened the window behind me in the blind, but unfortunately it is velcroed so it made a lot of noise. Didn't hear that turkey again, guess I spooked that one. I waited a bit and yelped a few more times, didn't hear anything. Suddenly about 25 yards straight out in front of me a turkey flew down out of a tree and landed right there!! Must have been roosted right in front of me and I didn't see it. Well, I poked the muzzle of my double throught he window, set the bead on its head, and pulled the trigger....nothing :shocked2: ... pulled it again...nothing  .... suddenly realized I had used the right barrel the day before for the squirrel  . I pulled the rear trigger, the gun thundered, lots of smoke in the blind, and the turkey was down  . It was just a small hen, but it will taste good :hatsoff: .

Great job. Our Fall turkey doesn't open up until the end of the month. There is a big hen hanging around the clubhouse but we've all agreed to leave her alone. We'd like to see her set shop and maybe have more turkeys around the place so we can hunt in the spring.

Hi NoDeer!

Nice story and nice turkey. Waidmanns Heil!

Such a flinter double barrel shotgun looks real nice. What was your charge?

Regards

Kirrmeister

Thanks everyone. Load was 80 gr. 3f powder, over powder card, 1/2 of a cushion wad, 1 1/4 oz. #5, and over shot card. Patterns pretty well, and dropped this turkey quickly at about 25 yards.

I like the looks of that Flint double...what make is it...commercially available or custom only?

It is a Navy Arms (Pietta)12 ga. that I had converted to flint, total cost, less than $800.

Good job. :hatsoff: Our first ever Ontario fall turkey season opens today. I am hoping to get out with my flinter as well.
