thats the lungs. The heart was saved and will be cooked up later on.
Not to digress too far but that reminds me of a true story you folks might want to hear.

A guy, kind of a cocky little man named Len went with us on a deer hunt. He was one of those, "know it all" types who seems to get a kick out of pointing out any little errors someone else might make but he wasn't abrasive about it.
Anyway, on opening day, he went off in his own direction and we went off in ours. During the day, I heard a few distant rifle shots but I didn't get one myself.

Late in the day, ol' Len got back to camp, sweating and dragging a small deer he had gutted. As we hung it up, someone asked, "Hey Len. Where's the liver?" A few more people joined in saying, "Ya Len. Where's the liver? We need to have a big feast of liver and onions for dinner to celebrate your success."

That's when Len said, "I didn't bring it. I left it in the gun pile." It didn't take Len long to realize this was a big mistake and he said he would go back and get it.

It was just about sundown when Len showed up back in camp and deposited a big lump on the cooking table. Almost in unison everyone said, What the hell is the matter with you Len? You brought us the lungs." :(:( By then, it was too dark to go back and get the liver so we made due with stuff we brought in case no one was lucky enough to get a deer.

From that day on, he was no longer Ol Len. His new name was, "Ol' Lungs and Onions." :D:D

Got this nice Colorado muley last monday! 60 yard shot, 40 yard recovery. Shooting a Traditions St.Louis Hawken kit gun I built a few years ago. 80gr 2fg Gearhart - Owen black powder, .020" patch and .490 round ball. The blood trail was excellent! So good, my girl friend ( her first time going on a hunt ) picked up the blood trail and tracked it for me.

exit,
I like that last picture, you should consider sharing it on an Australian muzzleloader forum...

Well done, congrats on a fine buck and shot.Your girl can track for me anytime.NY GRIZ

Outstanding! Great buck. Probably didn't have to track it far with it not having any front legs. ;)
Great shooting. That is a toad. I sure miss hunting mule deer. The last one I got was with one of my
primitive bows around Dolores, CO back when you could by over the counter tags. I would have a cow tag and buy a mule deer
tag when I got there from a little store where I camped close to. They were sure good eating up there in the high country.
Both of you did good. I like your short rifle. I built a .54 flint somewhat copying a TC Renegade using a Green Mountain barrel, pre inlaid
stock from Track of the Wolf and some parts I had laying around.
Enjoy the venison and good luck if you have more tags.
Mike

The nice thing about a double lung shot is they don't go far and they bleed alot, although some of the time it's mostly internal. Nice buck and it looks like it was a fun hunt, congrats!
